What is a Communications degree?

Communications is a universal degree, which explores the traditional forms of communication such as verbal, physical, visual and written communication but also extends beyond that to cover mass communication and social media. There are different types of communications degrees depending on the degree level.

Overall, Communications focuses on teaching effective communication through social media, web, print, mass media and verbal communication. However, there are two types of Communications degrees that exist. For instance, a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in the US is focused on preparing students for careers that are connected to writing, marketing, promotions, journalism and public relations. In contrast, Bachelor of Science in Communications is dedicated to the technology used in the science behind modern communication and prepares students for careers in production or sound engineering.

A Communications degree teaches students about how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. It involves a significant amount of critical writing and research and covers different disciplines such as journalism, public relations, entertainment production, marketing, event planning and so many more disciplines, which are somehow connected to exchanging information and conveying messages. There are also different specialization options associated with this degree, including political communication, mass media, journalism, health communication, etc.

It is worth noting that a Communications degree has many intersection points with psychology, sociology, linguistics and in some cases politics.

Benefits of a Communications degree

The main benefit of a Communications degree is its universal nature. It applies to almost any subject or professional setting. For example, some of the top careers in the field of Communications include announcers, art directors, editors, broadcast and sound engineering technicians, reporters, correspondents, broadcast analysts, technical writers, writers and authors, interpreters, translators, etc. Therefore, it keeps students’ career options open and doesn’t require them to have a predetermined career path that they want to follow.

Communications degrees prepare students to make an impact from the start of their careers unlike other degrees, which require further training. This is possible thanks to the multitude of professionally accredited degrees in Communications, which develop students’ abilities based on the established standards in the field. Moreover, there are many Communications courses, which offer work placement opportunities that enable students to gain the required professional skills before they have even started their career.

Another benefit associated with Communications degrees is the fact that they develop students’ written and verbal communication skills significantly.

A major advantage of Communications over other degrees is that in most cases there are no prerequisites required to study Communications.

Communications degree structure

The duration of a Communications degree varies depending on the country and degree level. For example, Higher Education Institutions in the UK offer 3-year Bachelor’s courses. In some cases, the course may extend to four years if students are given the opportunity to spend a year abroad or in industry between the second and third year through a sandwich course. Bachelor’s degrees in Communications in the US usually take around four years to complete.

Over the duration of a Bachelor’s Communications degree, students are expected to learn and be able to apply the established communications theories by developing the technical skills required to work in a professional setting. In the first year of their studies, students learn predominantly how media and communication influences cultures, societies and people’s identities. Optional modules may introduce them to professional communication, journalism, documentary, film-making, marketing, etc. In addition to the introductory topics, this degree allows students to learn about more complex areas of communications such as interpersonal relations, brand management and linguistics at a later stage. For instance, the second and third years enable students to get a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts related to media and culture and develop practical skills in research and communications. Additionally, students may have the opportunity to take optional modules and pursue their interests in different areas related to Communications such as gender, race, youth, culture, digital media, political communication, public relations, etc.

The most common duration of a Master’s degree in Communications is between 1 and 2 years depending on the mode of study (full-time or part-time) and country.

PhD and MPhil degrees in Communications require students to dedicate anywhere between 3 and 6 years to their studies depending on the mode and country of study.

    General information

The University of Wroclaw is a nice educational institution. I completed my first year of master’s studies and am now in my second. I studied social sciences, and the building and location of institutions aren’t all that impressive! It is located between houses and in the suburbs, approximately 20–30 minutes from the city center. Other institutions are at a better location -much nearer to the city centre and next to rivers, mall, etc-. Professors, on the other hand, are quite professional and courteous. They make every effort to provide information and encourage pupils to be better and believe in themselves. To be honest, there aren’t many activities for international students! However, the overall mood is pleasant.
I’ve never regretted my decision and would advise you to do the same. Because Wroclaw and Poland, in general, are amazing, I assure you will have a fantastic time here learning and extending your horizons.

    Internationalization

University of Wroclaw places a strong emphasis on internationalization. It attracts students and scholars from around the world, creating a multicultural and cosmopolitan atmosphere. This diversity fosters cross-cultural understanding, exchange and collaboration, this in turn makes us the students ready for an interconnected globalized world. Despite the language barrier faced by some international students, I would recommend the school to other people.

A doorway to explore the world & your path

As a current master’s student in the Communication Management program at the University of Wroclaw, I can confidently say that this journey has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life, not only academically, but also personally and professionally.

    1. Global opportunities through Erasmus+:
During my time here, I’ve joined two short-term BIP exchange programs in Spain and Romania (with a generous grant), and have a one-year exchange in Germany. These experiences have allowed me to meet peers from across Europe, learn in diverse settings, and grow both culturally and intellectually.

    2. Serious research, strong support:
I’m currently representing our Institute in a Monography research project of UWr, a valuable opportunity to engage deeply with academic work and collaborate with professors in a meaningful way. The opportunity is open for all students who wanna pursue an academic path.

    3. Supportive and passionate faculty:
The professors are not only knowledgeable but also truly approachable. In the first semester, I approached my professor for guidance on career path, research opportunities, and expressed my interest. She shared insightful experiences, motivated and encouraged me a lot. And she nominated me for the Monography research project under her supervision, and I got the opportunity. I’m grateful, honestly.

    4. Practice-oriented learning:
Unlike many programs that are heavy on theory, this one focuses on real-world projects, case studies, and group work – ideal for master’s-level students who want to build practical skills for the workplace. Actually, I don’t face much study pressure, I enjoy the courses.

    5. International Office that really cares:
The International Office team is incredibly helpful. During the application process, I was surprised that they always responded to my email inquiries quickly and helped me resolve any issues. When I study here, from paperworks support to academic/exchange activities, they are always ready to assist and create a welcoming environment for students from all over the world.

    6. Peaceful lifestyle & affordable living:
Wroclaw is a charming, student-friendly city with a mix of history and modernity. The cost of living is reasonable, making it accessible for many international students without compromising on quality of life. I travelled to many cities in European countries, but Wroclaw is one of the most peaceful and affordable cities. Although the English skills of the city officers are limited, they always try to support by using Google Translate or finding support people.

Studying at the University of Wroclaw has opened doors I never imagined: from international networks to research, from personal growth to professional clarity. If you’re looking for an educational experience that truly takes you beyond the classroom, this could be your next big step.

I appreciate this experience and believe that this is a worthy step to open up many opportunities to explore the world!

As a university, we are very grateful for the extensive and positive feedback that our students have provided, and we appreciate the time they took to post it. We are delighted that our contribution to organising the recruitment process, preparing the study programme and implementing classes and events relevant to the studies is appreciated. This is a sign to us that our passionate work is a good guide for the future, and that we should strive to develop it with even greater determination. We are also pleased that students are eager to take advantage of the various opportunities for development and practical experience available to them in their field of study, especially when they return from trips abroad with smiles on their faces and longing in their hearts.

Yes, I will recommend it if you would like to be stressed. This place is disorganized and it is very hard to resolve something with documents here. But studies here are really amazing! Professors are kind and like to work with us.

    Hospitability and experience

University of Wrocław is a perfect place for those who’d like to study in a hospitable and experienced environment. The professors can be strict; still, they’re understanding, expert, and very well-educated. The only disadvantage I can think of is the organisation which sometimes fails. Nevertheless, it’s a great university for everyone who plans to focus on education and still be able to have fun in the beautiful Wrocław which has a lot to offer.

Studying at the University of Wrocław

I’m currently in my fifth year of studying Psychology at the University of Wrocław, and overall, it has been a very rewarding journey. The faculty is well-qualified and supportive, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The campus is beautiful and located in the heart of the city, which creates a great atmosphere for studying and student life. There are also many opportunities to get involved in research projects and student organizations. While some administrative processes could be more efficient, the academic quality and student community make it a great place to study psychology.

    Good university but overrated

I completed my part-time studies in branding at the University of Wrocław and overall I had a positive experience, although not without reservations. I really liked many of my classes, but a large portion of them covered very similar topics, which made the programme feel somewhat repetitive. There were a few genuinely inspiring courses with strong, knowledgeable professors, but also several that felt like fillers rather than meaningful academic content – and unfortunately, the truly valuable ones were in the minority.

Because I studied part-time, I didn’t get to experience campus life or the community aspect very deeply. What I appreciated, however, was the attitude of the lecturers: they were understanding and flexible, allowing me to arrive late or leave early when necessary, as I travelled two hours by train to Wrocław for each session. Their approachability and expertise were definitely the strongest elements of the programme.
I still managed to meet some great people, many of whom I’m still in touch with. I also appreciate that several lecturers stayed in contact with me after graduation, which shows their genuine interest in students’ development.

Thank you for sharing your honest and balanced opinion. We’re glad to hear that many lecturers and classes had a positive impact, especially given the challenges of part-time commuting. We understand your remarks about repetition — some courses are mandatory due to programme and accreditation requirements, which can limit flexibility in the curriculum and may feel more pronounced in part-time study. Still, feedback like yours helps us grow and improve the areas we can. It’s also great to hear that you built lasting connections with both peers and lecturers. Thank you again for sharing your perspective.
