I studied International Affairs at the University of Warsaw and graduated in 2023. If I were explaining my experience to a friend, I would say it was demanding, eye opening, and very formative, but not without its challenges.
Before starting, I expected a strong focus on international politics, diplomacy, and global institutions. That expectation was mostly met. The course covered international relations theory, foreign policy analysis, European integration, security studies, and international law. There was a good balance between theory and real world case studies, especially when discussing the EU, Eastern Europe, and global power dynamics. I appreciated that the program did not stay abstract but often linked concepts to current events and historical contexts.
What I liked most was the academic depth. You are encouraged to read a lot, question assumptions, and build your own arguments. Essays and presentations pushed me to improve my research and writing skills, which helped me think more critically and structure my ideas better. The international environment was also a plus. Studying alongside people from different countries gave classroom discussions more perspective and made the topics feel very real, not just academic.
That said, the workload could be intense at times, and the program requires a high level of self discipline. Some courses were more engaging than others, and you really get the most out of it if you are proactive and willing to go beyond the minimum requirements.
Overall, I would recommend the International Affairs program at the University of Warsaw to a friend who is genuinely interested in global politics and is ready for a serious academic experience. It is not an easy ride, but it prepares you well in terms of analytical thinking, research, and understanding international issues in a nuanced way.

Studying at the University of Warsaw was both demanding and inspiring. The professors set high expectations but also guided us with real dedication. Their deep knowledge and encouragement pushed me to achieve more than I thought possible. I learned how to think independently, manage time under pressure, and approach problems with confidence.

Taking part in research projects and student activities helped me discover my passion and build practical experience.

It wasn’t always easy, but it was worth every effort. The University of Warsaw taught me resilience, discipline, and pride in what I can accomplish.

Studying in Poland can be a bit of a surprise for international students, particularly those from the West. The degree structure and content are definite strengths. Compared to a British humanities or social science degree, expect double the weekly contact hours. Also, be aware that to achieve high grades, you may need to meet specific professor preferences, as opposed to following strict peer-reviewed assessment criteria. Teaching tends to be more traditional, with each professor’s personal values reflected in their grading and assessment style. However, this has its perks—professors are often open to building personal relationships with students outside of class, which can be advantageous given the sometimes subjective grading.
