What Is an Economics Degree?

Are you passionate about the business and finance sector? Do you follow the national and international news? Then, an Economics degree is the answer. It has always been one of the most sought-after degrees amongst youth.

Economics degrees are designed to tackle all the issues that have an impact on financial situations, ranging from production to how resources are used. Candidates are trained to understand how the economy suffers fluctuations based on the market’s needs and wants followed by the market’s supply and demand.

By far one of the most crucial elements is that economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomic. Microeconomics deals with the economic behaviour at an individual level (companies, buyers, sellers and others), whilst macroeconomics illustrates the bigger picture, on a national or global scale (unemployment, economic growth, inflation and so on).

Benefits of an Economics Degree

Having an economics degree increases anyone’s chances to find a job, regardless of the field. This is mainly due to the fact that graduates hold many transferable abilities, such as analytical and problem-solving skills, that are suitable for any career.

A study made by the London School of Economics and Political Science showed that graduates from an economics course have a starting salary of £33,000 per year. Having a job in the field right after graduation is a major positive aspect and comes with a lot of opportunities for career advancement.

Economics Degree Structure

Economics degrees are usually a three years commitment and sometimes are offered as part of a joint degree. This means that Economics can be studied along with another subject such as engineering, management, law, computer science and others.

This degree can be found either as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BSc focuses more on economical theory and statistical techniques, while BA is combined with social sciences and qualitative modules.

    Block learning and then some.

I thoroughly enjoy my time at Bologna University. The professors are exceptional, knowledgeable, and supportive. I’m passionate about my subject, and the course offers the perfect balance of structure and freedom to explore my interests. The block learning format makes assessments more manageable, and the open-ended nature of the assignments allows me to dive deep into topics I’m passionate about. This flexibility has helped me discover my ideal career path. Bologna University also provides numerous opportunities, including internships, and free professional development. The support services, such as the careers team and one-on-one library support, are good too.

Good university with not so responsive management

The university and course is good but i do have a few problems with it. Till last year, they used to provide video lectures in case a student missed attending but they have discontinued this facility from this year and it’s really disheartening. On top of that, the course material is extensive and the video lectures are provided in case you mail the professor and it takes more than a few weeks to get a reply from them. I appeared for an exam and accepted the grade and its been more than a week that the grades have not been verbalized on my career.
The city is good but the public transport is not reliable at all. You have to wait for hours at a stretch to catch a bus and they are always delayed.
The problems are easily fixable provided that the university admin pays attention to them and actually listen to students.

A good university but not perfect

Everything feels good but the only problem is that university administration does not care about students. Let’s take an example of housing, the university’s admin services will conduct all sorts of surveys under the context of helping out but all of it never helps in understanding and rectifying the actual problems faced by students.

    Worth it with few drawbacks

The Law and Economics of International Finance program at the University of Bologna is overall very good. The courses are well-organized, the professors are knowledgeable, and the content is highly relevant to the current global financial and legal environment.

However, one major issue we faced is that compared to other departments, our program offers fewer exams. While this might seem like an advantage initially, it actually makes it harder for students — especially those who need to collect enough credits for scholarships. Since many of us joined the classes late, it became even more challenging to clear the necessary credits on time.

Another serious problem is accommodation for international students. It is extremely expensive and very difficult to find housing, adding a lot of stress during the academic year.

Additionally, ER.GO should consider that in our course, students are allowed to take only 5 bonus credits, which is not enough. Given the limited number of exams and our need to secure scholarship credits, it would be helpful if ER.GO could revise this policy or provide more flexibility for our program.

Overall, I am giving the program 4 stars because of its academic strength, but withholding one star due to the difficulties around exams and credit requirements.

    The program

Studying at one of the oldest universities in Europe has been an amazing experience. Its rich history is palpable everywhere, from the classrooms to the breathtaking old libraries. However, the program I enrolled in could have been better organized, with more hands-on experience to better prepare students for the job market.

Hi , I am very interested in Bologna but I only speak English. Do you think this is a good idea and that the amount of international students would mean I could have a good social life? Thanks

    Increasing Trend: Health Economics

The programme presents us a descriptive and practical teaching to health economics. The course variation is more than enough also the academic staff has a global vision. There are a bunch of opportunities for dynamic minds. The programme is international and centered in the heart of Bologna. Which is a plus for student life.

    Best uni ever

I’m majoring in Business and Economics, the program is really well done, and the professors are competent and experienced in the field. There is a good balance between theoretical and practical studying, and the professors are always ready to help. The environment is overall really good for students, filled with international students and people that can’t wait to make new friendships.
