National University of Ireland Maynooth – NUIM • Maynooth, Ireland
Also known as Maynooth University, this institution is the fastest growing university in Ireland. There are over 11,000 students attending NUIM – around 10,000 are undergraduates while the remaining portion is made up of postgraduate students and researchers. The student body is also very diverse, with approximately 90 countries represented across the group.
Academically, the university is divided into three faculties, namely Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy, Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering. 34 departments make up these three faculties, creating a wide range of choice for students all the way to doctoral level should they wish. Maynooth has contributed to several industries through their graduates, producing scientists, teachers, lawyers, and business people, among many more. Also, as previously mentioned, a certain amount of research is conducted at NUIM which focuses on developments in society this century.
While Maynooth is a popular choice with international students, it also attracts many visiting ones. Study abroad programmes at the university may last a summer, a semester, or a whole degree course. NUIM uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) so that students can translate the credits earned in Ireland to be compatible with their home country system, or vice versa.
Maynooth’s campus is made up of both eighteenth century buildings and modern academic facilities. The institution dates back to 1795. It is located close to Dublin, Ireland’s capital city. Taking only 30 minutes to drive in to Dublin, the university keeps up close relationships with several of the largest global companies who have bases in the Irish capital, such as Google, HP, and Intel.
Students can easily make their way into Dublin city, but there is plenty to do on campus too, with more than 100 student clubs and societies at the disposal of Maynooth students. These organisations’ activities are monitored by the Students’ Union, and are facilitated by the Sports Centre and Student Centre. Student accommodation is also available on campus.
