Originally called the Athlone Regional Technical College, what is today known as Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) (in Irish: Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Bhaile Átha Luain) can be found in the centre of the country of Ireland, in an area known as the midlands. Specifically located in county Westmeath, the institute of technology is made up of the following faculties: Science & Health, Business & Hospitality, Department of Lifelong Learning, and Engineering & Informatics. Across these disciplines, AIT runs more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Additionally, Athlone is the only Irish institute of technology that has the power to award PhDs, and they do so in four subject areas, namely Polymer Engineering, Toxicology, Software, and Microbiology.Show more
I attended AIT from 2016-2020 and it was amazing. The people I met there and the Craic we had was special. We lived in a six bedroom house near the college and was some laugh. We were regular charlie browns fans and was sad to see it burned down the year after I left in 2021.

View moreAthlone Institute of Technology (AIT), now the Athlone Campus of the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), are overwhelmingly positive, highlighting its strength as a student-centric and practical institution. Students consistently praise the campus for its friendly, inclusive atmosphere and high safety ratings. The academic experience is noted for being industry-aligned, with a practical, hands-on approach that leads to one of Ireland’s highest graduate employment rates. Key facilities, particularly the world-class sports arena and modern labs, receive high marks. A significant financial advantage is the campus’s location in Athlone, which offers a lower cost of living and more affordable accommodation compared to major Irish cities, making it an excellent value for money choice. However, some students note the downside of a smaller town setting, which translates to a less vibrant nightlife and fewer local part-time job opportunities than a large metropolitan area.
