University of Ghana has been one of the most sought after colleges in Africa but also it is the one-stop prestigious learning center for international students. I had the opportunity to study medical geography in UG from 2013 to 2017, and I loved it! The department lecturers are hardworking and examination questions are structured as open-ended so that students can think to answer them. I love that other students in the department are friendly and willing to get into study groups to meet and study together. There is the Geography Department Student Association that routinely organizes field trips to make our classroom learning experience very practical. Geography at IU has really paid off because I got admission to do postgraduate studies in the United States.
There is one thing that I think UG falls short in. And that has to do with high living costs. Canteens and small grocery shops sell at expensive prices. Considering myself an average-income student at UG, I had a difficult time trying to get nutritious food around my residential hall. However, there was a way around this – the Madina traditional market is closer to the UG campus, about 10 minutes drive. Madina market sells very cheap groceries and food and this made my life easier.
Overall, I think UG deserves its prestigious position in Africa, ranking among the top 15 universities. The lecturers are great and the campus is safe for students.
