The Technical University of Munich is a member of TU9, a society of the most notable German institutes of technology. Also, it is ranked 4th in the Reuters 2017 European Most Innovative University ranking.

TUM was founded by King Ludwig II in 1868 as the newly structured Polytechnische Schule München. By then more than 350 students were taught by 24 professors and 21 lecturers. More than 150 years later, the Technical University of Munich has fourteen departments at three locations. TUM could do that by taking over several smaller colleges that were no longer viable.

TUM’s alumni include 17 Nobel laureates, 18 Leibniz Prize winners and 22 IEEE Fellow Members.
