What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Lots of amazing stuff

I graduated in 2013 after getting a bachelor’s degree in comp sci, and there are so many amazing things to say about the school.

Residence was very hard to get into unless you were a first year. If you’re a first year you are guaranteed a spot in residence, but if you’re in second year and on it is extremely hard to get a spot in residence. There is pretty decent off-campus housing, it’s a little hard to find.

The food on campus was ok. Not bad, but not necessarily good either. If you’re not eating it for every meal than it’s a good option. Although they try and change the menu everyday, eventually they run out of options and it tends to get repetitive.

The facilities are in good condition, and it’s very hard to find a building that wasn’t updated in the last ten years. The two furthest classrooms from each other you can usually walk between in about ten minutes, so it’s not that far. In the fall to spring months it does tend to rain quite a bit, but other than that it is really nice.

The night life and clubs in Victoria aren’t the best unless you like the mainstream pop songs. But there are quite a few good bars and restaurants near campus. The public transportation is pretty good at getting you from campus to downtown.

Overall, it’s a great school, and. if someone were to give me the choice to redo my degree at any school, I would always choose UVIC.

    Location

UVic has one of the best locations you can ask for as a university student. It’s well connected to the rest of the city. The bus loop at UVic is the starting and ending stop for many main buses so its easy for students to get to and from the university. The beach is a 10-minute walk away. So is the Mount Tolmie hike! Victoria is filled with beaches and mountains and there are many places to hike and camp. Several trails can be found inside UVic itself so you can sneak in a hike in between classes! Victoria also has great cycle paths, so if you’re into biking, you’ll love the place! If you like the outdoors, UVic is a great place for you!

Victoria’s downtown is pretty good too! It’s very beautiful and there are great pubs/clubs, mostly filled with students! There are good places to shop for pretty much everything.

    International Students

UVic has many international students and if you’re an international student like me, you will easily be able to find friends from your own country. What I found a little challenging is how hard it can be to be friends with other people. To some international students, it can get difficult to relate with people from different cultures. On the brighter side, Uvic does a good job at organizing events that give you the opportunity to meet people from different countries and cultures. I appreciate the international student welcome through which I met many friends. The study cafe, game nights and floor/ building events are also good ways to hang out with friends and meet new people

    Computer Science

Computer Science (CSc) in UVic is pretty good. Most professors are knowledgeable and want students to do well. I strongly recommend going to office hours to clear concepts, ask questions and clarify doubts. This helped me get better grades in my courses. I find that the labs can sometimes be confusing and the instructions are not as clear as they should be. I’ve been confused several times. The CSs center in the ECS building is very helpful. I’ve gone there to seek help in some of my labs and the staff has been extremely helpful. They guide you along the right path and help you clear concepts.
Other than that, CSc at UVic is great and also offers many co-op opportunities to get hands-on experience.

    Great university!

UVIC has a comforting ambience they provide through their accommodations in the dom residence. The rooms provided differ in the way they can contain the students. The rooms can be shared by a single resident as well as two residents as well. Sometimes you would be mesmerized by the campus and the view you’d have through your window in spring, autumn or even it’s literally glittering with white snow. Walking through the campus has always been a calm and safe experience for me.
The medical facility provided is quick and efficient. Even during the pandemic the university has always been alert to our needs, taking precautions and acting swiftly for our requirements. They also have a ‘well-being’ sector/building for a quick reach for the students in need of medical help. Yet, sometimes the measures and the regulations can be bothersome, lagging behind the process. All in all, the staff at Uvic is forever ready to make us feel at ease.

Where on campus can I grab a snack ?

UVic has several places to eat on campus although they can sometimes be costly. Most students eat Mystic Market which has pizzas, chop box for noodles, Booster Juice, coffee and a general store. Its also a good place to study and get work done. The SUB (student union building) is also a popular place to eat. They have the health bar and a smoothie place for those that prefer lighter, healthier meals. There is also a grill available. Other than that there is the MOD where residents eat. The MOD serves hot dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. – 7 AM to 7:30 PM. Some buildings, such as the Bob Wright center and the Fine Arts building have their own small café/eateries.

Another popular place to eat/study is the Biblio cafe, right next to the library. Here you can enjoy hot and cold beverages and small snacks. I love sitting in Biblio booths with my friends. You are also free to get a coffee and work inside the library. Covid restrictions may change that though.
Sometimes there are also stalls outside the library/ quad area where they serve free meals. i’ve enjoyed some good hot chocolate during the winter.
Overall, UVic has several places to eat and grab quick meals from.

    Amazing Campus and Opportunities

I am in the computer science program at this university mainly because of the co op career opportunities it provides. Along with great classroom education with hands on experience, it aids in finding job experience before entering the market.

Victoria has comparatively a peaceful city life and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good balance. The city is well connected with bus routes and bikes routes as well.

    Campus and program

It’s an amazing campus with so much accessibilty! So much diversity and you feel included no matter where you go! I’ve had amazing professors for my program so far who go out of their way to help you understand the content of the course. Outside computer science, the department of math is also super helpful and efficient.

    Overall good!

The university is in a good location with great weather. The computer science faculty seems knowledgeable. However, it can be hard to get into upper year courses for csc courses. The co-op option is good for students who need more experience before graduating. Good choice overall.

Lovely campus, good facilities, sense of community

If you are looking for a smaller, friendly university with a beautiful campus, UVic might be a great match. You can get pretty much anywhere on campus in 10 minutes or less and the university has many green spaces and forest walks nearby. Cadboro Bay park/beach is also a 10-minute walk from campus. The library has great study places for individuals/groups with a cafe attached. The Student Union Building (SUB) has a grill, health food bar, pub, pharmacy, general store, cafe, and a movie theatre. The university is also building a new dining facility that will be ready as of September 2022 but offers a food court-style eating facility for students as well. The meal plan food is pretty good overall, however, if you are vegetarian/vegan, you might have fewer options. If you are interested in working out on a regular basis, I recommend getting a CARSA gym membership. CARSA gym on campus has multiple turf fields, a climbing wall, a variety of gym/workout equipment, and group fitness classes. As for the academic side of UVic, although class sizes for first-year students are pretty big, the teachers are very good and seem to care about individual student success. Teachers hold office hours at least once or twice a week where students can get help on homework or ask questions. Although UVic offers a housing guarantee for first-year students, the housing market in Victoria is pretty brutal and you will need to start looking for second-year accommodations early. Overall, I would recommend UVic to other students as it has a beautiful campus, good student life, and quality professors. UVic is surrounded by residential neighbourhoods, so if you are into city life and want a more lively feel, a university situated downtown might fit better.
