UBC has extensive resources for clubs, interests, and recreation. UBC will most likely have something for you if you are passionate about something. In terms of academics, I’ve met friends from different faculties and they all have mixed opinions. In general it really just depends on your faculty, if you’re in science and engineering, you will most likely have a terrible work life balance, if you are in arts or sauder (business) you will enjoy your uni experience very much. I would say 90% of the profs are very friendly and they care about their students.
Now.. life in UBC!! Definitely there’s a bit of cliquey vibe here and there but it’s such a big school, putting yourself out there and be selective about who you’re friends with will get you a long way – there are so many people out there that are so cool and you just need to get through the tough part when meeting people you do not vibe with.. other than that, UBC is great.
Pros are that there are a lot of studying areas, welcoming community, offers a variety of programs. Cons are that it is expensive such as parking fee, food, educational fees. Also it does get crowed during studying season
View moreThe academic staff and Professors excellent. They are concerned about the students’ academic performance. The learning environment is excellent, and the class sizes are perfect. The dorms are neat and tidy. The entire atmosphere in the community is fantastic and active. There are activities and clubs to join every day! I strongly recommend UBC to anyone looking to go to college in Vancouver.
View moreIt’s a huge university with too much competition and too little space for personal growth. If you’re a people person, don’t come here. If you’re a highly academically driven student this one’s for you. There’s little activities to do outside classroom so it’s kinda draining just to study all day and still not get good grades due to high volume of students and the teachers trying to keep the average grade less.
View moreMy first year at UBC has been a bit of a roller coaster to be very honest. I started the year being very excited about the fact that I was going to live away from home, with my friends, in a new city. First term was a blur, in the sense that everybody was so excited to be finally on campus that there were so many things happening which made it immensely hard to have a grip on life during that time and somewhere or the other academics for me and most of my friends took a back seat. UBC is a great campus with amazing professors and great facilities but the first term did not let me have enough opportunities to explore that. One thing that I do not like about the resources is science advising. it is this body that counsels you about your degree and other aspects of your daily life. In the second term, I was facing a lot of issues and needed to contact advising for counselling but they seemed to be never available to take an appointment. Their online website was also full and they did not have an emailing system to them. That was a bit disappointing for me.
View moreUBC is a great school overall. It does have its flaws, as all schools do because none are perfect. The people, location and community is really what made me fall in love with the institution. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The city is quite beautiful and there are many places to explore. In terms of extra help outside of class, the school is on top of it. There are many different programs and extracurricular that can aid in being successful. Some of the flaws of the school I would have to say is the limited eateries on campus and expensive living. Other than that, I love UBC.
