What Is an International Business Degree?

Globalisation strengthens the connection between companies from all over the world. It is time people understand the importance of international business.

International business degrees are shaped to give students practical knowledge about different business management practices from all over the world. In addition, candidates are prepared for business careers abroad or in organisations that are engaged in business on a global scale.

Moreover, international business is vital in order to understand different cultures and mindsets and ultimately become a global citizen.

Benefits of an International Business Degree

A degree in International Business prepares you for a job in a culturally diverse business environment, which means that any graduate can benefit from opportunities in any country.

The advantage of an International Business course is that you are highly employable for most industries since the majority of skills acquired are transferable.

Candidates studying international business will also gain information and insight about the difficulties of starting and growing businesses from different countries, something which is of utmost importance for anyone who wants to make their business thrive.

International Business Degree Structure

International Business is usually a three-year commitment, depending on each university. Lately, there are institutions which offer the possibility of having a ‘sandwich course’, which basically enables the candidates to work abroad for one year in the industry, as part of their studies.

The purpose of the ‘sandwich course’ is to encourage students to step outside their comfort zone and work in a different culture and environment. In this way, they will understand other mentalities, as well as gain relevant working experience in the field.

    Great English/French Bilingual Environment

I studied Communication with a Minor in Management at the University of Ottawa, and I can honestly say that this vibrant campus in downtown Ottawa holds countless cherished memories from my undergraduate years. One of the unique aspects of the University of Ottawa is the English/French bilingual program, where students can choose to take classes and write essays in either language. I have greatly benefited from this option, as my program was primarily in French. I have not only been able to solidify my French language skills but also discover a diverse francophone culture. Whenever you walk around the campus, you experience a rich francophone atmosphere!

During the freshman year, we all had to take fundamental courses like Philosophy and English or French Literature, regardless of our major. These were often in large classes, but as we progressed to our senior years, the class sizes became smaller, promoting a higher degree of meaningful discussions between the professor and the students. Moreover, I’ve always felt so supported by my faculty, particularly the Faculty of Arts, where I received guidance on changing my program of study and selecting courses. Each faculty has its own building and academic office, and you can contact your faculty’s office for help if you ever have any difficulties or questions, they are always just a phone call or a visit away.

What I absolutely love about the University of Ottawa is the range of student events and activities they organize. There are various student events during the start of the school year, such as Welcome Week, Movie Night, Food Carts, and so on. Both new and returning students can participate in these activities and get involved in the diverse culture of the campus while meeting lifelong friends. There are also many student organizations, so whether your passion is music, sports, community involvement, or leadership development, you’ll find your tribe here!

Looking back, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude for the growth, opportunities, and challenges that the University of Ottawa has provided me. It’s a place that feels like home, where I’ve not only honed my academic skills but also discovered my passions and made lasting connections.

Not Another Title, For the Experience Seekers

Universities are experts at embarking knowledge in their students, yet the majority fail to grant the most valuable asset of all, experience. The University of Ottawa is unique in this regard. With their international management program requiring a mandatory semester abroad, you are sure to gain the experience required to truly understand foreign cultures. Information that is truly applicable in the real world. Yet they don’t stop there. This fall, I will be embarking on a 12-month exchange in Bordeaux, France, whereby I will gain a degree from my home institution, KEDGE BS, and a four-month internship abroad. The University of Ottawa has given me the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in both foreign educational systems and foreign work environments. Not to mention the impact on oneself of being immersed in a foreign culture. My degree at the University of Ottawa is not just a title, but a true experience, something I recommend to any experience seekers.
