My experience studying International Business & Trade at Thomas More was much more than attending classes and passing exams. Throughout the programme, I had opportunities that helped me grow academically, professionally and personally.
The first year mainly gave me a broad foundation in different areas of business and introduced me to presentations, group projects, case studies and working with people from different backgrounds. Not every course interested me equally, and some subjects could sometimes feel quite theoretical, but the knowledge became more valuable as the programme became increasingly practical.
One of the biggest strengths of the programme was definitely its international character. I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Malaysia. Living and studying on another continent was one of the highlights of my degree and taught me independence, adaptability and how to work and communicate across cultures. The exchanges, school trips, international projects and people I met made the “international” part of International Business & Trade feel very real.
My final year brought me closer to professional life through my internship with Thomas More’s International Support Team. This experience helped me improve my professional communication, public speaking, problem-solving and ability to work independently. It also showed me that the transition from school to the workplace can be challenging, and I think the programme could prepare students even more for practical workplace tools, systems and everyday responsibilities.
Another important part of my final year was my bachelor’s thesis, where I researched personalised support strategies for welcoming African international students at Thomas More. It was a topic I genuinely cared about, which made the process much more meaningful.
Overall, I appreciated the professors who connected theory with real companies, business cases and their own professional experiences. For me, however, the biggest value of the programme came from the complete experience rather than one particular course: studying business, working in international teams, travelling, going on exchange, completing an internship and gradually discovering my own strengths and interests.
I would recommend International Business & Trade to students who are internationally minded, curious about business and willing to step outside their comfort zone.
My biggest advice to future students is to take advantage of everything beyond the classroom. Go on exchange, join the projects and school trips, participate in business cases, meet new people and take your internship seriously. Those experiences are what turned International Business & Trade from simply a degree into an experience that genuinely shaped me and prepared me for what came next.
