Thomas More is a University of Applied Sciences, meaning that big part of the learning happens through projects, hackathons, workshops, and coding assignments (in my case).
This is an interesting setting, designed for people that aim to get a job right after the degree. It is amazing for that because third-year students have an allocated 3 months period to complete an academic internship. The school gives students 3 months to focus solely on the internship, and they stay involved with all of them, up until the very end.
My time at Thomas More was amazing, but if you’re not sure if you would like to get a master’s degree after, i would recommend a regular research university. This applies only if you decide to study technical degrees at Thomas More, like Applied Data Intelligence, Applied Computer Science, etc. Non-technical degrees allow for a smoother transition to master’s degrees.
Overall, my time here has made me into someone capable of building anything I want, but not someone who truly understands systems tradeoffs. I studied “Data Science, Protection and Security”, today known as Applied Data Intelligence.
Luckily for me, i got into a major tech company that has planetary scale, and here i get to learn how to evaluate systems and think more like an engineer.
If i went to a regular research university, i would complain about not knowing how to build anything i want instead. Schools like Thomas More are an interesting twist to how learning happens.
