What Is a Marketing Degree?

A business cannot survive if its products are not marketed in the proper way. Luckily for all the businesses out there, the number of candidates wanting to pursue a marketing career is growing tremendously.

The aim of this degree is to help students anticipate, manage, and satisfy customers’ needs and wants. By doing so, they will be able to effectively communicate the benefits of any business product to the targeted market.

Due to the fact that marketing is a complex industry, which tackles many areas ranging from market research to advertising and promotion, this degree focuses on all parts of the process before concentrating on a particular area of study.

Benefits of a Marketing Degree

Good news for marketing graduates! If you did not know yet, marketing is an essential aspect of all types of businesses, from all sectors of activity. Thus, all of them rely on marketers to promote and sell their products. A high market demand comes with many job opportunities available.

According to Labor Department Findings, graduates with a marketing degree can earn 98% more per hour than the ones working in the industry without having a specialised degree.

Furthermore, students are equipped with transferable skills, such as excellent communication abilities, strategic thinking, planning, data analysis and so on, that can be used in other industries too.

Marketing Degree Structure

Marketing degrees can be studied either as Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). The major difference lies in the presence of more scientific and technological aspects, which are commonly seen in a BSc rather than a BA.

Like most degrees, marketing courses last between three and four years, depending on the university. However, there are institutions which give students the possibility to do a two-year associate’s degree – also called a ‘foundation’ degree.

Even if graduating from both degrees qualifies candidates to work in this industry, a Bachelor degree has higher chances to lead you to well-paid jobs.

    My Unforgettable Experience at UOW

My time at the University of Wollongong was nothing short of transformative. The university is nestled in the serene and beautiful city of Wollongong, providing a perfect, focused environment for learning. The campus itself is stunning, with excellent facilities and a very reasonable student-to-staff ratio, which made the entire academic experience much more personal and engaging.
What truly made my experience exceptional, however, was the quality of the teaching staff. The professors were not only knowledgeable but also genuinely friendly and approachable. I am particularly indebted to my Strategic Marketing professor, Professor Kamel Micheal.
I will never forget the time I was working on a research paper about Starbucks’ marketing strategy. While many professors would just offer feedback in their office, Professor Micheal went above and beyond. He personally took me on a field trip to a local Starbucks, where he provided a live, professional deconstruction of their store layout, customer engagement, and brand positioning. This hands-on, practical analysis was incredibly insightful and brought the theoretical concepts from our textbooks to life.
Thanks to his dedicated mentorship and unique teaching approach, my paper not only earned a well-deserved ‘A’ but also gave me a profound understanding of real-world marketing. I am eternally grateful for his guidance.
UOW is more than just a university with great infrastructure; it’s a place where educators are deeply invested in their students’ success. I highly recommend it to any student seeking a holistic and supportive educational journey.

    VALUE for money

The University of Wollongong (UOW) offers a great student experience. The campus is set in a beautiful, coastal town with stunning beaches, making it easy to relax after a day of classes. Accommodation is affordable and there are plenty of options on and off-campus. Tuition fees are reasonable, especially considering the high-quality education and friendly atmosphere. There are various scholarships available for international students, which can help alleviate some financial stress. The university has a strong sense of community, and professors are approachable and supportive. Extracurriculars are plentiful, from clubs to sports teams, and the student union regularly organizes social events. UOW offers excellent value for money and is perfect for students seeking a balanced lifestyle with good academics.

    Overall a good experience

I studied Bachelor of Communication and Media majoring in Marketing Communication and Advertising at UOW for 3 years. The structure of the program was clear and well organized. Most of the professors and staffs were amazing and happy to help you with any questions or issues. The school has students from around the world with different cultures, so I did make a lot of new friends as well. One thing I did not quite understand that the course fees was about 3 times expensive for me as an international student compared to a local student.
