For some years after the university opened, there was controversy about the policy of free education that was implemented, as there were high expenditures and the financial stability would be at stake. However, there were large sums of money yelded, which allowed the university to keep their doors opened.

In 1946, the Doctorate of Philosophy degree was introduced, which would win its first award 4 years later to Warwick Bottomley, for his research of the chemistry of native plants in Western Australia.

The university was the first in Australia to separate the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees available, as it is easier for both local and foreign students understanding the system. Currently, University of Western Australia offers a great variety of bachelor degrees, from the areas of Law and Social Sciences, to Humanities, Engineering and Computer Science. Furthermore, it currently has 186 Postgraduate courses for the students to choose from, and over 15 professional courses.

Student life in University of Western Australia

For years, the university has had a healthy environmen within its campus, and there is a fair amount of events every year. One of them has been happening every year since 1936, called Prosh. In that event, students get together to raise funds to provide underprivileged local children day picnics throughout the year and other similar events with the same purpose. As for the sport, the college has all the tools to give athletes the best conditions to perform, such as a recreation center, a fitness center, an aquatic center, as well as a boat shed, a physiotherapy, and other facilities. The University of Western Australia Student Guild is the body that represents students and their vision is to be inclusive and representative of the student community and to provide relevant, high quality services to its members, whilist remaining environmentally and socially conscious.
