The University of Melbourne curriculum is not only of great quality and value, but also structured and applicable to real life. They provide many means of learning with lecture capture and online options, promoting a great study-life balance. The campus is its own little magical world, with thousands of nooks and crannies to enjoy as a Unimelb student.

I believe that stepping into the university life is tough, and it wasn’t the truth until my second semester in my first year. One of the biggest reason why it was not as difficult as it should be could be excused by 1) I worked extremely hard during my first semester, hence the first semester lacked challenges or 2) My first semester was an illusion. I have always defined myself with grades and my second semester gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone, I am still very much insecure and constantly seeks academic validations, but the staffs are supportive and the environment created by the people surrounding me were nothing less than dreamy. It is tough and I do not expect it to get easier, but I was able to now grasp concepts I thought I never could and apply these skills. I am motivated to start my own project and I have learnt to reject the thoughts that I could never be able to handle so many things at once.

The application process to the University of Melbourne is the most painless application process I have been through, everything is super clear and detailed. The best part is they respond super fast, 11 days in my case; it does not even stop here, while getting my visa and planning my course I was always able to get support from the the university by booking virtual appointments with them and they were always super helpful.

However, when I finally got my visa and came to the university, I started wondering if they actually cared or if it was all just public relations. The University of Melbourne prides itself in being “Australia’s number 1 university”, but sometimes I felt like they did not do enough to show for it. I took four subjects during my first semester, one of which was forced upon me, even though it has nothing to do with my major or what I want to do, but the university decided that I have to take and pay for it.

Moreover, the university’s student union seems to care about politics than the actual students, they do campaigns against climate change, Israel and in favour of extending the free tram zone, but never have I seen a campaign to lower the university’s insane international students’ tuition fees which are two to three times higher than those for domestic students.

Finally, the university does have great learning environment, it is positive and the lecturers are great and, for the most part, they try to actually help their students, but the in a lot of cases the university under pays them to the point that they have to do compromises.

In a nutshell, I think that the University of Melbourne is a great place to learn, but they need to focus more on the students and the lecturers than on sheer profit.
