What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

Great for in-depth study of theoretical knowledge

As a graduate of the Master of Global Media and Communications program, I gained theoretical knowledge in various fields such as digital media, public relations, global data security, and global journalism. The program covers a broad range of topics and is more generalized, serving as an introduction to the media industry and helping you find your focus area for further in-depth study.

The University of Melbourne is one of the top universities in Australia that offers excellent facilities and student services. The campus is well-maintained and offers a range of study spaces. Several buildings also have computers for students to use. Non-study spaces are also available for entertainment purposes, such as dance studios and sport venues.

    The Networking Opportunities are endless

The University lives up to its expectation as being the number 1 university in Australia. With amazing staff and lectures it provide students with the knowledge to succeed in their career. However, the university has an elitist feel where students who have wealthy backgrounds are more likely to succeed.

    Step it up, UniMelb

My experience at the University of Melbourne has been… somewhat positive. I have enjoyed the content in my subjects and the wide variety of subjects it offers. I enjoy the atmosphere too, the study spaces and amenities, and the people from my experience are all quite friendly. However, what the university does lack lies in its poor student service availability due to major budget slashes and its underpaying its tutors. For example, there is never an open slot for Stop 1, the go-to for any questions from students and student services. Booking for the free counselling on there is an absolute nightmare and it is clear that the top higher-ups do not invest into students’ wellbeing. Some of the sites, such as MyAllocate and the subject enrolment site can have errors and glitches too. If the university could step it up and truly hear out the opinions of students, then maybe I think it could be worthy of a top Australian university nominee.

Diversity and Difficulties of subjects at UoM

The University of Melbourne encourages diversity in its community and it is prevalent in all settings across the campus. As an international student, I felt a welcoming environment from staff and students that contributed to my academics and extra-curricular activities.
I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Psychology. I am quite satisfied with the subjects as it does go into depth on the various categories of psychology. However, I would have hoped to see more practical implication, career-wise, for the subjects. Often times I feel that students can disappear into only the theoretical usage of their gained knowledge university, clearly showcasing career paths of each subject or first hand accounts of experts in the field would be vital.

My fruitful experience at the UniMelb!

University of Melbourne shocked me with its plethora of student support services. As an international student from Singapore, I entered Australia with no prior knowledge of how uni life was going to be like. One programme that I absolutely loved was the fresh food programme 2022 that targeted food insecurity amongst students at UniMelb. A generous amount of fresh fruit and vegetables were handed out monthly – containing onions, bananas, pumpkins, apples, mandarins and more. The fresh food box was extremely useful as the amount of food given could last me weeks. As an international student who had to cook my own meals and juggle studying, University can get overwhelming at times and planning grocery trips and meals can be a hassle. The fresh food programme lessened the toll of grocery shopping on students.

    Bachelor of Arts

The University of Melbourne is a fantastic, however intense and competitive institution. It provides an amazing education and allows us to gain a variety of experiences, such as through internship subjects and employability projects. I have found however that at times subjects are poorly coordinated, visible through exam errors and less engaging lecture content. I found in my first year that students were close minded, especially towards students of colour, however this has changed to a more open and engaging environment over the last year. Overall, I love my degree and believe it is perfect for me.

Influential atmosphere in University of Melbourne

As an arts student, there is no other university I would pick in Australia, but the University of Melbourne. From the 1800 Victorian style buildings to the expressive fashion around campus, I can really be myself in the campus. The atmosphere is one which inspires and allows creativity to bloom, which is something incredibly valuable for me. The helpfulness of stop 1 in guiding university students to the right resources, the lost on campus app that helps students navigate university, the peer mentoring program for freshers, the approachable and warm nature of lecturers and tutors, the clubs and societies and, overall just the amazing array of resources to enhance my university experience has truly been a blessing. You will always feel welcome and included in the university of melbourne and there is no better place to be to learn and grow.
