As a fresh high school graduate looking to pursue STEM education USTHB seems like the obvious choice for many considering its history, reputation and its contribution to the upbringing of state engineers , however upon spending almost 4 years there i realized that there is a lot more to it that perhaps was not made evident to me before applying.
The factor that stands out the most is how difficult the exams are regardless of the degree as most professors tend to want to test the students’s problem solving abilities rather than their ability to memorize the courses and the solutions.
One other thing that stands out is the rather low level of some of the students there, to put into consideration how difficult it is to obtain a degree there you’d think there would a be more strict application and selection process however that’s not the case and most people that apply get accepted and then later face these challenges that they were unaware of leading to poor performance of their part.
This university is for hard working people who have a lot of time to dedicate to their studies and are not distracted by other occupations such as work or travel…
I also find undergraduate programs there tend to be incomplete and that most students feel the need to apply for masters if they want to actually find work in their field of study.
As a Master’s student in Software Engineering at the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), my experience has been both enriching and challenging. The university offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, with a large campus that supports both academic and student life.
The atmosphere among students is friendly and highly collaborative. Whether you’re working on projects or just studying in the library, you’ll find a strong sense of community and mutual support.
Academically, USTHB provides a solid foundation. The teaching staff is diverse and well-qualified, including both passionate young professors and experienced senior instructors. The courses are well-structured and directly relevant to real-world work — I’ve personally applied much of what I’ve learned in my own professional experiences. However, the workload can be overwhelming at times, so time management is essential.
One of the standout features of the university is its support for internships and real-world experience. USTHB has strong connections with various companies, offering valuable opportunities through partnerships and dual agreements. There are also many research opportunities and industry connections for those looking to go further in their fields.
Beyond academics, student life is vibrant. The university hosts a wide range of clubs and organizes regular events, allowing students to explore their interests and socialize outside the classroom.
Overall, USTHB is a diverse and expansive institution that prepares students well for their careers. While time management could be improved, I would definitely recommend the university to others seeking a comprehensive and practical higher education experience.

I’m currently enrolled in the Computer Science program, with a vision to become specialized in Software Engineering and Information Systems field, this is my second year through the program and I am only loving it more, mainly because of the highly competitive coding environment, the professionalism displayed by our professors and the free resources and services provided by the university.
While it might have its negative aspects, it’d still be the best environment to build and develop both your mentality and professionalism if you knew what waves to surf, getting you ready and excited for the professional world.
