The Best Places to Study Artificial Intelligence in Europe 2025

06/12/2024

Artificial intelligence is everywhere, and chances are, you’ve played around with ChatGPT or Gemini, or use them daily as part of your work or studies. But the industry is ever-evolving, which means there are plenty of opportunities for graduates with technical know-how and a passion for technology. But where are the best places to study artificial intelligence in Europe?

Earlier this year, QS released their annual ranking of the best universities in the world for Data Science and AI. The 2024 ranking is only the second time that QS has ranked universities in this particular field, and grades universities on academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per published paper, the H-index (a measure of researcher productivity) and their International Research Network score (a measure of international research).

In this blog, we’ve combined the top five universities from the QS rankings with a few of our own picks for the best universities for AI education. All of these universities are pushing boundaries in AI research and education, and ensuring that their graduates can work in the most inventive companies and startups in the world.

Best AI Universities in Europe due to the QS Ranking

Highlight is the connections I have made.

I really enjoy the diversity of opportunities available at my university. The academic programs are excellent and offer a wide range of disciplines to choose from. Additionally, the professors are knowledgeable and approachable, and the resources available to students, such as the library and the computer lab, are top-notch. I also appreciate the many extracurricular activities offered, such as clubs and sports teams, as they provide opportunities to get involved and meet new people. The campus is beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is very positive and supportive. Overall, I feel like my university has given me a great education and has helped me grow both academically and personally.

4. University College London (UCL)

University College London

London was recently named the best city in the world to study artificial intelligence, in part because of the expertise in AI centres at universities like Imperial College London and University College London.

The MEng in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at UCL combines these two related disciplines, resulting in a course that targets the technical knowledge students need to apply AI in real life. The Master of Engineering is taught over four years, allowing students to gain a deep knowledge of topics including machine learning, localisation and mapping and human-robot interaction.

Great programme overall!

The programme is great for those aiming for careers in research and innovation sectors. However, I do feel that the staff are sometimes “unfocused” in terms of being slightly distant from the students/not taking the time to personally help us with things. Sometimes, I feel like our opinions are also ignored. However, the degree itself is very interesting and I feel that I learn a lot from it.

BSc. in communication systems

EPFL is an exceptional university that embodies excellence in education and research. With its world-class faculty, collaborative environment, and cutting-edge technology, it empowers students to thrive and innovate. Its commitment to pushing boundaries and tackling global challenges makes EPFL a true pioneer in shaping the future.

There are many EPFL associations for students who would like to do arts, philosophy, sports or have a hands-on experience, I personally worked with the Rocket Team EPFL and Junior Entreprise EPFL as a software engineer.

Each semester you can choose courses that best suits you and in each course several teaching assistants will make sure that students have a good understanding of the course material.

All in all, students are well-supervised, they can do as much activities as they want and it is easy to make new friends.

Theoretical vs practical

My experience with the university so far was good. The curriculum is very demanding but people know that beforehand. Students have the ability to participate in a few programs to gather practical experience but they are few. So you get out of the programs without much practical knowledge.

Best education money can buy

The University of Edinburgh is one of the best in the world, especially in the field I studied – machine learning. The lecturers are professional, knowledgeable and approachable, always finding ingenious ways to engage their audience.

The labs are well-equipped and the libraries are well stocked.

The projects for grades were well structured and explained. Most of them involved working in pairs or groups. I think this improved my social skills in myself and others. Furthermore, grouping people with different backgrounds made us more tolerant, understanding, and willing to teach each other in subjects where we were lacking familiarity.

As soon as I graduated I was able to find a job relatively easily. I believe my degree has equipped me with all the skills I needed to be required for the interviews.
