What Is an Economics Degree?

Are you passionate about the business and finance sector? Do you follow the national and international news? Then, an Economics degree is the answer. It has always been one of the most sought-after degrees amongst youth.

Economics degrees are designed to tackle all the issues that have an impact on financial situations, ranging from production to how resources are used. Candidates are trained to understand how the economy suffers fluctuations based on the market’s needs and wants followed by the market’s supply and demand.

By far one of the most crucial elements is that economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomic. Microeconomics deals with the economic behaviour at an individual level (companies, buyers, sellers and others), whilst macroeconomics illustrates the bigger picture, on a national or global scale (unemployment, economic growth, inflation and so on).

Benefits of an Economics Degree

Having an economics degree increases anyone’s chances to find a job, regardless of the field. This is mainly due to the fact that graduates hold many transferable abilities, such as analytical and problem-solving skills, that are suitable for any career.

A study made by the London School of Economics and Political Science showed that graduates from an economics course have a starting salary of £33,000 per year. Having a job in the field right after graduation is a major positive aspect and comes with a lot of opportunities for career advancement.

Economics Degree Structure

Economics degrees are usually a three years commitment and sometimes are offered as part of a joint degree. This means that Economics can be studied along with another subject such as engineering, management, law, computer science and others.

This degree can be found either as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BSc focuses more on economical theory and statistical techniques, while BA is combined with social sciences and qualitative modules.

Review of the University of Zambia (UNZA)

My time at the UNZA was a memorable experience, and graduating from one of the country’s most recognized institutions was a proud achievement. However, the journey came with its fair share of challenges.
The registration process was often disorganized and frustrating, marked by long queues, slow service, and constant movement from office to office. This inefficiency made what should be a simple process unnecessarily stressful.
Academically, some lecturers were either rarely present or provided minimal instruction, falling short of the quality education expected from such a prestigious institution. Overcrowded classes due to over-enrollment further diluted the learning experience, making it difficult for students to get the support they needed. Living conditions in certain hostels were also poor, with frequent water shortages that the university failed to address. UNZA heavily leans heavily on theoretical learning, often at the expense of creativity and practical skills. As a result, many graduates leave with degrees but limited real-world readiness.
Despite its challenges, UNZA remains a prestigious institution that shapes the future of Zambia. The pride of graduating from such a renowned university is unmatched. While the system may have inefficiencies, the quality of education and opportunities for growth are undeniable. It provides a solid foundation for students to make an impact, both locally and internationally.

My Unza Experience at The University of Zambia

🎓 The University of Zambia (UNZA) – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

As a **BBA student minoring in Economics**, I’ve experienced UNZA’s highs and lows firsthand. Yes, it’s Zambia’s top university—but surviving here takes grit!

    *✅ The Good:*
    – **BBA + Economics minor** is a powerhouse combo for business careers.
    – *No spoon-feeding!* You’ll learn independence through relentless research.
    – *Reputation matters*—UNZA grads dominate Zambia’s corporate & public sectors.

    *❌ The Bad:*
    – **Lecturers do the bare minimum**—don’t expect extra help or deep explanations.
    – *Registration is a nightmare*—slow, inefficient, and staff rarely care to fix errors (missing results, anyone?).

*🔥 The Ugly (Campus Reality Check):**
    – **Hostel Crisis:** Only **3,000 beds for 30,000+ students**—good luck finding accommodation!
    – **Dilapidated Facilities:** Broken furniture, crumbling walls, and **filthy bathrooms** with frequent **water outages*.
    – *Health Hazard?* Poor drainage, clogged sewers, and **questionable sanitation**—pack your disinfectant!
    *Exposed Electric wiring*

*Bottom line?* UNZA **will* toughen you up—whether from academics, admin battles, or surviving the hostels. If you can thrive here, you can thrive anywhere. 💪
