The University of Zambia has established itself as one of the leading institutions in Zambia and the Southern African region. As a medical student, I have experienced this university’s positive and negative aspects.
The university prides itself on academic excellence and diligence, attracting some of the best lecturers from across the country who bring expertise in various fields. It offers a conducive learning environment that encourages students to excel in academics, sports, social interactions, and professional networking. It has a central position connected to a mall, hospitals, and essential facilities. The university also provides numerous extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, cultural opportunities, and research organizations. It also has a strong mentorship program, primarily driven by senior students, supporting academic and personal growth.
The University of Zambia is affordable. It provides scholarships, financial aid, and tuition fee waivers, making it accessible to a wider range of students. Moreover, the institution equips graduates with the skills needed to be industry-ready, offering professional opportunities to help students leverage their careers.
There are a few things I dislike about the Univerisity. Firstly the infrastructure is outdated and in need of renovation, and the library requires modernization with updated resources. Laboratory and workshop facilities could also benefit from significant improvements. Furthermore, the online systems need better optimization for more streamlined use.
Despite these challenges, I would highly recommend the University of Zambia. It is an institution that nurtures leaders and drives development both nationally and regionally.
