How UH Came to Be
The beginnings of the university can be traced back to 1907 when the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in Honolulu was established by the Hawai’i Territorial Legislature. The institution was made possible by a United States land grant legislation. At the time only ten students attended what would become UH, and thirteen faculty members worked there. Today, having expanded far past Honolulu, over 50,000 students are in attendance at the University of Hawai’i; the majority are undergraduate students (roughly 46,000) with around 5,000 at the postgraduate level.
UH Today
Studies at UH range from certificates to doctoral degrees, with a total amount of degrees offered by the university amounting to more than 720. UH is organised into many different colleges covering an extensive amount of subject areas to facilitate so many degree programmes. Parts of the UH system include Mānoa, Hilo, and West O’ahu.
Distance Learning is offered by the UH system to reach even more students who may not be able to physically attend classes at a university facility. It is carried out by audio, visual, and computer technologies.
The university also has a lively sports scene, with athletic teams such as UH Mānoa and Hilo Vulcans.
UH in the Wider Community
Students from a variety of nations attend the UH System, with Hawaiians, mainland Americans, Filipinos, and Japanese students alike making up the student body. UH’s unique location as a connection between the East and the West allows for an international mingling of cultures and ideas.
In the Hawaiian community, the UH System has contributed significantly to economic growth in the area, providing jobs in various sectors, producing a more highly skilled future workforce, and making jobs through its research endeavours.
