The University of California Berkeley is a public institution founded in 1868 with the vision of a university that would contribute to the glory and happiness of future generations more than California’s gold ever did. It is often referred to as Cal and blue and gold were chosen in 1873 as the official colors to represent the University. The state’s emblem, the grizzly bear, has been turned into the mythical guardian of the institution, referred to as the Golden Bear. Berkley is well-known for liberal student activism thanks to The Free Speech movement in 1964.Show more
UC Berkeley has a high standard for academic excellence and integrity and truly rewards hard work. This school opens its doors to students from all walks of life and from all over the world. The curriculum and classes are advanced and difficult, so there is an expectation for a strong sense of priorities and responsibility. There are so many clubs and opportunities to get involved and work with incredible people outside of school as well. No place like it, truly.
View moreBerkeley started difficult on an academic front and definitively retained that status. It pushed me personally and professionally, resulting in me building and honing skill sets I could not even dream of obtaining. I met brilliant professors and mentors, inspiring students and colleagues as well as forged friendships that will last forever. Go Bears and Fiat Lux!
View moreThe University of California, Berkeley is spread across a vast area. Although being a large school is positive in the sense that you get to meet diverse people from all over the world, it becomes a negative when it comes to receiving advice from professors. It is extremely difficult for tutors and professors to keep up with the number of students, however, they always provide help in due time. The University provides a wide range of courses. Unlike many other renowned Universities, it does not only include mainstream courses. Being the top public school in the world, Berkeley provides the best educational experience. In addition to that, it also provides a student with a holistic extra-curricular experience. Whether it comes to societies, the nightlife or daily speech’s by knowledgeable individuals. Everyone is extremely helpful, whether its other fellow students, professors or the alumni.
View moreI think the hardest part about Berkeley is the competitive, almost cut-throat, atmosphere among students but this is also Berkeley’s strongest point. It ensures students step out of their comfort zones and find their own path in college. There are unlimited opportunities at Berkeley and this may be overwhelming at first, but it is something that grows on to everyone in due time and is invaluable as it prepares us for the real challenges that await us post-college. A downside at Berkeley is that often students find themselves lost in the crowd, considering the massive size of the university. This can be really overwhelming in the long run and students should definitely factor this into their college decisions. Unlike other places, to be successful over here, one must be prepared to run around, chase professors and do everything by themselves. Academically, the coursework is definitely challenging, but again, it is something that you get used to and learn to work around as you make progress in the university. Another advantage at Berkeley is its diverse student body and all-inclusive environment. There are events for almost all global festivities held on campus and this gives students an opportunity to experience and learn more about different cultures and traditions.
View moreThe University of California, Berkeley being the no. 1 public university in the world is one of the largest public schools. While a huge school like this one offers a multitude of opportunities ranging from academia to sports to research to socio-cultural events to Ted-talks, it has its downsides in terms of the lack of individual attention to students. I feel lucky to go to an institution which offers 97 distinct undergraduate degrees, concentrated into 75 majors within 22 broad fields of study, allowing students to explore various subjects before deciding their path. A way to tackle the lack of individual attention prevalent here, students must make individual efforts to reach out to the many resources available on campus which most definitely makes the academic journey easier. All in all, a great school with a world-renowned academic standing, highly qualified faculty with some of the most successful alumni who remain rightly involved with the institution!
View moreGreat university for anyone who wants to succeed academically and professionally. Being located in the Bay Area (Silicon Valley), Berkeley attracts the best professors as well as the best companies for recruitment. Berkeley prides itself in its research work, hence the numerous scientific advancements and inventions at Berkeley (16 periodic elements, the atom bomb, CRISPR-Cas9, etc). The social life at Berkeley is awesome and you see so many protests and movements every day that it opens your eyes to several important issues in modern society that need addressing.
While the academic environment is very competitive as everyone is looking to do the ‘next big thing’ at Berkeley, that environment is what pushes you and motivates you to work harder. Being in the presence of world-renowned scholars and professors, as well as the brightest students in the world really allows you to learn in a manner you probably haven’t before.
All in all, a fantastic world-renowned university with the best facilities and opportunities you could ask for. It is definitely very difficult and challenging but trust me, it’s all worth it!
Overall, Berkeley is a really good university. It has a lot of amazing professors and it is rated among the best universities. However, the only down side is that it is very competitive and it is not too diverse.
View moreBerkeley is the best school. It’s got the best campus life and spirit, there are hundreds of different clubs or teams to join, and so many ways to find your community here. You’ll meet people from all around California, the US, and the world. Yeah, it can be stressful, but everyone’s in it together. go bears.
View moreOverall, Berkeley is a good university. It really depends on one’s personality and interests. Berkeley can be a very tough place sine people here are very focus on academics and majors like Business are very individualist. The international body is noticeable, but must of the time they hangout with their own people. Also, we have amazing teachers, but don’t expect ALL of the them to be perfect. It might be hard to integrate and find your group of friends at first. If you are looking for a university that is very academic centered, this might be your place. If you’re looking for a community-type university, I would think about it twice. However, it is possible to find that balance. It just takes patience.
View moreI would definitely recommend attending this university. Teachers were great – having a great mix of technical knowledge and common practices from the industry. The opportunity to work independently with the faculty was also very helpful – one or two classes took me to me to the limit of my capacities
