The University of California Berkeley is a public institution founded in 1868 with the vision of a university that would contribute to the glory and happiness of future generations more than California’s gold ever did. It is often referred to as Cal and blue and gold were chosen in 1873 as the official colors to represent the University. The state’s emblem, the grizzly bear, has been turned into the mythical guardian of the institution, referred to as the Golden Bear. Berkley is well-known for liberal student activism thanks to The Free Speech movement in 1964.Show more
If you want to feel like you’re learning from the people who actually run the world, UCLA is it. The teachers here exude a level of confidence that is infectious; they don’t just know their subjects, they own them. Whether it’s a Nobel laureate or a leading researcher, they command the room, which makes you feel like you’re getting an elite education.
View moreI have greatly enjoyed being a UC Berkeley graduate student. The workload has been challenging as expected of an R1 institution, but the environment and resources available on such a large campus have truly made my experience meaningful and helped me succeed. My experience with professors has been that they are dedicated and passionate about their teaching, strict but fair. It’s also a lovely place to live if you love being outdoors and temperate weather. I hear from undergraduates that the dynamics can be much different and much more demanding as you’ll be constantly split between classes, work, and orgs, but your people are somewhere on campus–you just have to find them.
View moreUC Berkeley, or Cal as some call it, is great for the ability to be able to network and with potentially motivated and likeminded people in a small radius. Cal excels in its endless opportunities within its schools, institutions, and clubs. From study abroad opportunities to internships, research, and work study, there is always something to take your mind strictly off of your courses. As a legal studies major, I loved that my courses were primarily taught by professors of law, and almost always other Juris Doctors or Ph.D. graduates. In fact, one of my favorite classes was taught by the Dean of the Law School and one of the most cited and well-known lawyers, Erwin Chemerinsky.
Where UC Berkeley fails is its emphasis on safety as one of the most dangerous campuses in the country, At the time I studies there it was 4th most dangerous campus in the country. This is what promoted me to unsuccessfully run for student body president in the spring of 2023 in an effort to help campus police coordinate with the student government. It’s aims to be inclusive is purely performative, from the students and the institution alike, regardless of one’s race, age, or other protected classes. Their perception of you will follow you around and it will be hard to break that perception once it is formed. This has the effect you being put in a box when it comes to what others believe you should or should not be doing. Regardless of its downfalls I would recommend UC Berkeley to students, but I would also recommend that they try to plan for those 2-4 years as much as possible in the event that Cal is a match.
View moreMy professors in every class I’ve attended have challenged me to advance both intellectually and personally. They are more than just teachers. From the time I entered my first course, I could see the lecturers were dedicated to helping their students succeed. They always go above and above to make sure we understand the material and are prepared for exams. Uc Berkeley exceeded my expectations in addition to meeting them. It has given me amazing opportunity to develop, learn, and succeed. One thing that truly stands out, in my opinion, is the lecturers’ discipline. They hold us to a high level and anticipate that we will work hard to succeed. This has given me greater motivation to learn more.
View moreFor me, my period at UC Berkeley has been incredibly fulfilling and educational. There is something new to learn almost every day! And there are so many amiable people! The professor really does care. due to its diversity. Both the campus’s diversity and beauty are impressive.I could see that my professors genuinely cared about me and the subjects they were teaching. I never thought that I couldn’t ask them for help in my life or with my academic assignments.I never imagined that I wouldn’t be able to ask them for assistance in my daily life or with my schoolwork. When all is said and done, the school is outstanding.
