Established in 1899 and authorised by the Texas legislature, the Southwest Texas State Normal School started off with only 303 students. The university’s original purpose was to provide education in the field of science and agriculture. When a partnership with San Marcos School Board began in 1912, new training was introduced to allow students to become teachers. During the first 40 years of its existence, 18 other buildings around the main building were constructed. In 1923, the Texas Legislature changed the school’s name to Southwest Texas State Teachers College until 1959, when it was again renamed to Southwest Texas State College. Eventually in 1969, the name was changed one last time to its current name.Show more

First of all, Texas State is beautiful. The crystal clear river flows right through campus, and there’s plenty of spots on campus to sit under a flowering tree. Second, in general, TxSt professors genuinely care about their students. In honors classes and even in larger lectures, TxSt sets up resources for you to succeed. Third, Texas State is on a fast track to becoming a major research institution. It’s rapidly growing, adding majors, and adding advanced degrees. I miss my days in San Marcos continuously. Just a short drive from San Antonio AND Austin! In general, the college and local communities are progressive, and you have no trouble finding LGBTQIA groups, environmental groups, and major-specific activities.
