History

Established in 1899 and authorised by the Texas legislature, the Southwest Texas State Normal School started off with only 303 students. The university’s original purpose was to provide education in the field of science and agriculture. When a partnership with San Marcos School Board began in 1912, new training was introduced to allow students to become teachers. During the first 40 years of its existence, 18 other buildings around the main building were constructed. In 1923, the Texas Legislature changed the school’s name to Southwest Texas State Teachers College until 1959, when it was again renamed to Southwest Texas State College. Eventually in 1969, the name was changed one last time to its current name.

Life as a Post-Grad from Texas State University.

Looking back almost ten years since I graduated, I cannot think of a better time in my life than at Texas State University. The moment you drive into San Marcos, you are instantly greeted by a glass-like river that is open at your disposal to swim in daily thanks to the crazy Texas weather, greenery all around, and life in the great Hill Country. Texas State offered me more than an education; it offered me a place to be myself, friends that I am still as close to today as then, and a place to find myself.

One of the most diverse campuses in Texas, you will meet anyone from your hometown to other countries, to different races, different backgrounds…the list goes on.

The main thing that drew me to Texas State also was its affordability. In a time where college is almost, if not, unaffordable, life in San Marcos was not. Classes were relatively cheaper than other major universities in Texas and the rent in San Marcos was too.

The professors were some of the best you’ll find around. Most were natives of the area receiving their PhD’s from Texas and moving South for a relaxed life living in a beautiful city.

One professor stand out and that was Tom Grimes. If you have the chance to spend 5 minutes talking with him, you will have received a gift that nothing of monetary value can replicate. It’s not just him, it was most professors. They were normal and understanding people.

All in all, if you have a chance to get to San Marcos, do it! I regret nothing about my time there.

The Most Beautiful Campus in Texas

I adore Texas State University. It is a beautiful campus, surrounded by nature. Because of Swell (the campus river), we house tons of wildlife. The campus is not only beautiful, but the professors and staff are wonderful too. I am planning on returning for my MFA and hoping to be a professor there one day.

    International students and school resources.

As a student at Texas State University, I appreciate the school’s excellent resources, engaging teaching methods, and welcoming environment. However, I’ve noticed that international students like myself often struggle to navigate the administration section. To improve this, I suggest establishing an information desk to provide clear guidance. Additionally, offering free photocopying services for international students would be a huge help, considering we’re managing our finances from abroad.

    Highly dedicated Instructors

What I’ve discovered about Texas State is that the professors are genuinely dedicated to their students, communication with the administrative staff is consistently clear, and the education provided is highly fulfilling. The campus is always evolving and is within walking distance to the vibrant downtown nightlife. Up to now, it has been a secure and lovely campus with stunning views. I also like the variety of food options available on campus.
