Although SUNY at Fredonia has many great programs all surrounding the arts, many students find it hard to find themselves within these programs. Great programs don’t amount to very much without students who want to be in them. With professors who care more about a deadline than understanding the material in order to better utilize it in the field, it’s clear why students are frustrated with the way the campus is run. Students are told that they have the ability to speak freely, and have open minds. Yet, when Fredonia made the papers in Spring of 2023 for a certain professor encouraging Pedophelia and the ideas behind it, many students went to great lengths to let the college know how the felt about it. They used the school paper, local new channels, even just telling their professors how disgusted and upset they were about it. But, in the end, nothing was done about it, as that professor does still have a job on campus. The students don’t feel heard, they feel as though their voices do not matter. Fredonia promotes free speech and then ignores it when it is used. This is why many students don’t speak to faculty about problems they are experiencing. They believe that their voices will not be heard, and in turn do not see a point in doing anything on the matter. This causes a stressful and unsafe environment for everyone involved, causing even more of a disconnection between Fredonia and its students. It’s hard for students to focus on the great programs that they are in when they are so busy worrying and stressing about so many other problems. The students don’t feel welcome, they don’t feel safe, they don’t feel comfortable. Sadly, can we really blame them?
