Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) stands out as a solid, underrated pick for folks chasing an affordable, community-driven college experience. Founded in 1925 and nestled in the charming small-town setting of Hammond, Louisiana, SLU enrolls about 13,000 undergrads and ranks #74 in Regional Universities South by U.S. News for 2026—nothing flashy, but consistently praised for value and support. It’s got that “just right” size: big enough for variety, small enough to actually know your professors. If you’re eyeing a state school without the chaos of a massive flagship, this could be your spot.
In-state tuition clocks in at around $8,373 per year, with out-of-state at $20,851—way friendlier than many peers.

The tuition fees are also affordable with various scholarships provided both before the application and during a students college life. Dorms are also affordable but living in apartments nearby will save you a lot of money. The professors are also very good and provide help even during the weekends. The only drawback to this University is its weather. Students who want to select this University for further studies should prepare themselves to face extreme heat and humidity during the summer. The winters are accompanied with chilly weather with wind gusts and dry weather. Extra curricular facilities are also very good.
