Western Governors University offers a unique approach to higher education that truly caters to self motivated individuals. The competency based education model allows students to progress at their own pace, which was a huge benefit for me as someone balancing work and family commitments. If you’re disciplined and can manage your time effectively, WGU provides the flexibility you need to succeed.
What stood out most was the level of support I received from the faculty. While the learning is self-directed, you’re not alone. My program mentors were always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer encouragement. They genuinely cared about my progress and were instrumental in helping me overcome challenges. The online resources and learning materials are also well-structured and comprehensive, making it easier to grasp complex concepts.
However, WGU’s self paced format demands strong discipline, making procrastination a risk. Limited student interaction online can feel isolating. The competency based model requires demonstrating mastery, challenging those preferring traditional methods. While practical skills are valuable, some miss depth in classes. Success requires proactive time management and engagement.
Overall, my experience at WGU was positive and rewarding. The combination of a flexible learning model and dedicated support system created an environment where I could thrive. If you’re looking for an accredited online university that values student success and empowers you to take control of your education, I highly recommend considering WGU.
My experience at Western Governors University was exceptional. I truly loved every aspect of it. The program’s flexibility made it incredibly convenient for me to balance my personal and professional responsibilities while pursuing my degree. The modules were well-structured, user-friendly, and designed to support deep understanding rather than rote memorization.
One of the highlights of my journey was being awarded for my work in the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment course—a recognition that reflected both the program’s academic rigor and my personal growth. The support I received from my mentor was beyond words; it made all the difference in staying motivated and on track. WGU fosters a student-centered environment, and I’m grateful to have been part of a university that truly prioritizes learning, excellence, and support.
View moreWGU is great because they offer fully online graduate programs. My coursework is interesting and relevant to the roles I’m seeking to apply for. They really sold me on the “finish your degree faster” by learning at your own pace on your own time, thus saving yourself money (since you pay per semester instead of per credit). The difficulty is there aren’t always examples and you’re mostly teaching yourself. If your completed assignments aren’t exactly in line with the rubric, they are returned which can take 3 days turnaround time. I’ve earned 6 credits to date (passed 2 classes). I’ve been working on the third assignment for my third class for over a month because it keeps getting returned for revisions. So far, out of 5 assignments (“performance tasks”) I’ve attempted, all 5 have been returned at some point. I think it’s great they have high grading standards, but sometimes I feel they’re purposely slowing me down so I have to spend more time and money to finish, especially when the “examples” aren’t that detailed or similar to the actual task.
View moreWGU allows you to take classes at your own pace and graduate without 20,000 in debt. I took six classes with only paying $3,000 my first semester. The downside is no classmates or professor contact but you can have class when/where you want.
