What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

Management degrees take 3 years to complete in the UK. However, their duration could extend to 4 years if students choose to spend a year in industry between their second and third year, which is a popular option among the student community. “A Working Mom’s Path to Higher Education”

My UoPeople Experience: What I Loved and What Could Be Improved

    What I really liked:

My experience at UoPeople has been extremely positive overall. What stood out most was the flexibility of the program. As a working mother, having the freedom to study at my own pace and complete coursework around my job and family responsibilities was life-changing. I could participate in classes during times that worked for me, without having to sacrifice my children’s needs or my work commitments.

Another major advantage was the tuition-free model. Knowing I could pursue higher education without accumulating overwhelming debt gave me confidence and peace of mind. The affordability of the program made it possible for me to dream bigger and actually take steps toward achieving my goals.

I also appreciated the diverse learning environment. Interacting with students from around the world brought different perspectives and added depth to class discussions. The instructors were supportive, engaged, and always willing to help, which made the learning process feel encouraging and motivating.

    What could be improved:

While my experience has been positive, there are a few areas where I believe improvements could be made. One challenge is that some courses feel very discussion-heavy, which can be difficult when balancing a full-time job and family life. It would be helpful to have a few more structured study resources or guided materials to support learning, especially for students who may struggle with self-directed study.

Another improvement could be more timely feedback in some courses. When feedback is delayed, it can make it harder to understand where you need to improve before the next assignment. Increasing consistency in feedback timing would help students stay on track.

A Strong, Pragmatic Choice with Specific Challenges

For a student in Myanmar, UoPeople is not just another online university; it’s a unique lifeline and a strategic tool. Its value is immense, but it comes with a set of challenges that are particularly pronounced given the Myanmar context.
    The Major Advantages (The Pros)
Cost & Accessibility: This is the single biggest advantage. With no tuition fees (only assessment fees per course, ~$120-$150), it is arguably the most affordable internationally-accredited degree available. For students in Myanmar facing severe currency devaluation and economic hardship, this is transformative. Scholarships for the assessment fees are also available and are often granted to students from crisis-affected regions.

No Geographic Barriers: You can study from anywhere with an internet connection. This is crucial for students displaced by conflict, those living in remote areas, or anyone unable to relocate or obtain a visa for study abroad.

American Accreditation: UoPeople is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This gives the degree more international weight than many local options, which is valuable for future employment with NGOs, international companies, or for applying to graduate programs abroad.

Flexibility: The 100% online, asynchronous format allows you to study around power cuts, personal schedules, and unstable internet conditions. Weekly deadlines provide structure, but you can choose when to study.

Global Peer Network: Learning in discussion forums with students from over 200 countries provides incredible cultural exposure and builds a global professional network—a significant asset.

    The Significant Challenges (The Cons)
The Internet Reality: This is the most critical hurdle. UoPeople’s model requires consistent, reliable internet for accessing materials, participating in weekly discussions, and submitting assignments. In Myanmar, with frequent power outages, throttled connections, and unpredictable blockages, this can be a major source of stress and academic risk.

The “DIY” Learning Model: UoPeople is a minimally-guided experience. There are no video lectures from professors. Learning is based on reading assigned materials, peer discussions, and completing assignments. You must be an exceptionally self-motivated, independent, and resourceful learner. This style does not suit everyone.

Peer Assessment Quality: A core part of grading is assessment by fellow students. The quality of feedback can vary wildly—from insightful to useless or incorrect. As a Myanmar student, you might also face occasional language or cultural misunderstandings in these peer reviews.

Limited “Campus” Experience: There is no traditional student life, clubs, or in-person networking. The social and extracurricular aspect of university is almost entirely absent.

Local Recognition in Myanmar: Within Myanmar, the value of a UoPeople degree is not yet widely understood by all employers, especially more traditional local companies. You will need to proactively explain its accreditation and model. Its primary recognition value is for international pathways.

    My Experience at UoPeople)

Studying at the University of the People has been a valuable and empowering experience for me. What I appreciate most is the flexibility—it allows me to continue my education while managing personal responsibilities and challenges. The online system is simple to use, and the structured weekly discussions help develop critical thinking and academic writing skills.

The peer-learning model has also been a unique experience. While it requires responsibility and self-discipline, it teaches collaboration, feedback skills, and independence. Many instructors are supportive and provide clear guidance, especially when students actively engage.

UoPeople is not an “easy” university, but it is a meaningful one. If you are motivated, disciplined, and truly want to learn, it can open real opportunities—especially for students who may not have access to traditional universities. Overall, my journey at UoPeople has helped me grow academically and personally, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to study here.

    Why I said YES!

Why I Chose the University of the People MBA Program

When I started looking into MBA programs, I had the same concerns many working professionals do: cost, flexibility, and whether the experience would actually feel meaningful in a global business world. After careful consideration, I chose the University of the People (UoPeople) MBA program, and it has exceeded my expectations in ways I did not fully anticipate.

    Affordability That Truly Changes Access
Affordability was a major deciding factor for me. Traditional MBA programs often come with overwhelming tuition costs that can take years—or decades—to pay off. What immediately stood out about UoPeople is its tuition-free model, where students pay only modest assessment fees per course. This structure made pursuing an MBA financially realistic for me without sacrificing other responsibilities or taking on significant debt. Knowing I could invest in my education without financial stress allowed me to focus more fully on learning and growth rather than cost.

    Flexibility Designed for Real Life
One of the biggest strengths of the UoPeople MBA is its flexible, fully online format. Courses are asynchronous, which means I can complete readings, discussions, and assignments around my work schedule and personal commitments. This flexibility has been essential, especially when balancing professional responsibilities and family life. Despite the flexibility, the program maintains structure and accountability through weekly deadlines, peer discussions, and instructor feedback, which keeps learning consistent and engaging.

    A Truly Global Learning Environment
What has surprised me most—in the best way—is the diverse culture within the program. I interact with classmates from all over the world, each bringing unique professional experiences and cultural perspectives into discussions. Whether we are analyzing case studies, debating ethical dilemmas, or collaborating on group projects, the global nature of the student body adds depth and realism to the learning experience. It feels like preparation for real-world leadership in an interconnected economy rather than a purely academic exercise.

    Final Thoughts
The University of the People MBA program has provided me with an education that is not only affordable and flexible, but also rich in global perspective. It has allowed me to grow academically and professionally without putting my life on hold. For anyone seeking a practical, accessible MBA program that reflects the realities of today’s global business environment, UoPeople is an option well worth considering.

A Life-Changing Platform for Global Learners

    · Programme: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
    · Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5 Stars)

As a student from Afghanistan balancing studies with being a football coach and content creator, UoPeople has been nothing short of transformative.

The flexibility is its greatest strength. I can access my courses and complete assignments entirely on my schedule, which is crucial for anyone with professional or personal commitments. The fully online, tuition-free model isn’t just a concept here; it’s a reality that genuinely opens doors.

The global classroom is invaluable. Discussing business concepts with peers and instructors from dozens of different countries provides perspectives you simply cannot get from a textbook. It prepares you for a real, interconnected world.

Is it demanding? Absolutely. The work is rigorous and requires self-discipline. The platform (Moodle) can have a learning curve, and you must be proactive in seeking help from advisors. But this self-directed model is precisely what builds resilience and real skill.

I chose UoPeople for its accredited, American-standard education that is accessible from my location. It has lived up to that promise, giving me control over my future. I highly recommend it to self-motivated learners worldwide who are seeking a credible and affordable path to a degree.
