The Loyola University of Chicago is a beautiful college with its main campus looking out towards Lake Michigan. If you want to study or relax and enjoy the view, the newly built Information Commons is the place to be. On one side it looks out to the lake, and from the other, you can view the entirety of the campus. It is a smaller school that tends to have quite a lot of students. Although there are not many outside activities for students due to the campus seeing all the seasons throughout the school year, there are many indoor activities that mostly take place in the Damen Student Center. Events like movie nights and ice skating can all be found in that building. The school also offers a variety of majors, the top being Business and Forensic Science. A downside to this school from my experience has been the quality of teaching. Although only mostly taking my general education classes along with a few major classes, I have noticed that many of the teachers are not able to explain the information effectively or answer questions from students. I believe that for the price of the high tuition, there should be better teachers. The tuition, however, also does include guaranteed housing for the first two years as well as many free activities for students downtown and free medical services.
View moreI graduated from Loyola’s SCPS program in 2009. As a full-time working adult I liked that this program was designed for adults like myself who wanted to obtain their degrees while holding full-time jobs. Classes were scheduled in the evenings and weekends. Workload was manageable. Most of the professors also had full-time day jobs while teaching part-time. Nevertheless they were all knowledgeable in the subject matter and accessible. I got my degree in exact amount of time as was projected by the admissions office. What I didn’t like is that after completing the program and obtaining my degree there was no follow up from the University. There were no offers for job assistance. And, up until few years ago, there were no opportunities to connect with the alumni. The only form of correspondence that made it into my inbox and mailbox were solicitations for gifting. Piles of these solicitations left a bit of a blemish on my overall pretty basic experience.
View moreThroughout my time at Loyola, I found the professors to be very knowledgeable and accommodating. I was challenged academically, which I am extremely grateful for. However, Loyola’s advising department is rather disastrous. It seems to be a common phenomenon that students feel they lack the necessary guidance from the advising department. The school is expensive for most students, and many feel that the advising department fails to provide adequate advice and guidance to ensure each student is on track to graduate on time. My advisors were extremely hard to contact and schedule appointments with, and through talking with other students, they felt similarly with their advisors as well.
