I graduated class of 2023 as a Professional Writing graduate from Kutztown university. The writing professors were very knowledgeable in their respective fields, from magazine writing to novel writing and everything in between. The campus is in a small rural town but has a bustling campus life with lots to do at any point during the week.
However, if you’re not into small town life, this university is not for you. There was also a distinct lack of activities on campus during the weekends so unless you’re a partying type, many students often go home for the weekend if they’re local. If not, you can drive to the nearby cities of Reading or Allentown for things to do, but neither are accessible if you don’t have the ability to drive as there’s no public transportation. But on the flipside, all students, regardless of academic year, are allowed their vehicles on site.
My biggest issue with my writing program came down to lack of assistance when searching for an internship, which is required to graduate in this major. Perhaps it depends on which professor is running it that semester and I was unlucky, but I did not receive much help in my professional seminar, which is supposed to be a class that aids you in your internship research. I was basically handed a list of past internships our students have done and told good luck.
Despite this, I landed a fun internship within the university itself and enjoyed that experience. Overall, if you’re looking for a quiet town but active community, I do recommend Kutztown. It was a very fun experience while challenging me in ways I’d never been before.
