Because of the welcoming and entrepreneurial spirit at this university, I have truly loved my stay here. You are always encouraged to produce your best work and take advantage of every opportunity by your lecturers and staff. Excellent facilities and an extensive selection of resources at the library are highly helpful to students.

George Mason University (GMU) is a commuter school that has a dispersed community of students, some online, some hybrid, and few living on campus. Navigating this challenging atmosphere of “post”-pandemic times has made it challenging to take advantage of everything GMU has to offer. Entering the university as an exploratory student, with an undeclared major, I found it difficult to truly position myself in classes that offered any introduction to the more than 70 majors offered by George Mason University. Many classes were moved to an online setting, with professors unequipped to properly use the technology and troubleshoot at home. In addition, many professors did not have their lessons, labs, or lectures accessible on the GMU provided BlackBoard Collaborate software. After a few classes were moved in-person or hybrid, I began to meet more people, professors, and staff. The professors and staff in the Math Department and Integrative Studies Department were able to provide me with great scholarship opportunities that both fit my career interest and gave me enough freedom to work within my schedule. I do appreciate the cultural diversity in the school, with a 60-40 minority-majority split, with 60% of the school attended by students representing ethnic minorities, and 40% of the school representing white. The students of George Mason take pride in celebrating their cultural identities and do not shy away from who they are. Embarking on my 3rd-year in George Mason University, I personally would not recommend this school to individuals who are looking for a traditional college experience. This is a commuter school, with no football team, very few on-campus activities available to their off-campus students, and a small campus. I would recommend this school to an individual who is working part or full-time because of the online class availability.

There is so much diversity at GMU! Everywhere you look you see so many different types of ethnicities and religions – you never see the same type of people twice. There are so many different restaurants on campus, whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a fourth meal! Southside is the largest all you can eat dining room and is an all you can eat restaurant with many different options. I feel very safe at George Mason University. It’s in a beautiful location. Campus security does a good job of making all students feel safe. The school is located in the heart of Fairfax. Fairfax City is just down the street with plenty of shopping, dining and other activities. The GMU is relatively close to the Fair Oaks Mall and several theaters. Fairfax Corner 14 is a popular spot with occasional outdoor music, beautiful water fountains, a theater, plenty of shopping, and quality restaurants at an affordable price. Everyone I’ve met is very accepting of differences and celebrating them rather than making fun of them.

GMU is arguably one of the most diverse schools in Virginia. There are hundreds of different races, ethnicities, religions, political beliefs and languages. GMU is proud to accept and celebrate this diversity. GMU wants to work to eliminate those negative stereotypes that are so harmful to people and bring about a shared understanding and acceptance of differences between people. I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had in class that have helped me break down those stereotypes and open my eyes to the truth about every single person and their beliefs. It’s not uncommon to walk around the campus and hear at least 10 different languages ​​being spoken. Everyone I’ve met is very accepting of differences and actually celebrates those differences instead of making fun of them.

George Mason is a great academic university. You have so many different choices and programs available. The majority of teachers I have met genuinely care about the students and the subject they teach. I appreciate all the school spirit that Mason has! Student organizations organize many fun and useful events for students that are enjoyable to attend. George Mason University has great diversity. Everyone is so nice to each other and the teachers are fantastic. They are willing to do whatever it takes to help their students and ensure they excel in their class. I also like the student life on campus. There are so many clubs and organizations to join that it feels like home. There is something for everyone, even if you feel like you don’t fit into any program, there is always something for everyone. I felt that way at first but the Campus 360 app is very helpful in finding clubs to join and that’s where I joined most of my clubs and was lucky enough to connect with d other students with the same associated interests.

I enjoy every part of studying at George Mason University. The variety of classes and majors allows a broad demographic of students to attend to reach their success through engaging classes, brilliant professors, and an academic atmosphere of future success being the ultimate goal. There is a large variety of students with all backgrounds, including no discrimination based on gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, age, and disabilities. We are provided with many internship and study abroad opportunities, and many other ways to get involved in our field. The professors are passionate, understanding, and want to help you excel in their class. As someone with disability accommodations, they are always understanding and helpful to make sure my opportunity is no less than any other student.
