In 1919 a cooperative education programme was implemented to enhance its focus on career preparation. The latter was an integral part of the university’s educational experience, which consisted of alternating practical work experience with classroom study. In 1936, the institution was renamed as the Drexel Institute of Technology, and later, in 1970 to Drexel University, as its status had changed.

During the presidency of Constantine Papadakis, the university had several improvements and its programmes were changed, as well as the enrollment process. The number of students doubled, and the endowment increased almost 5 times during his period as president. This led to a more selective approach to admissions and a more rigorous academic programme as well. In 2002, the Drexel University College of Medicine was created, and in 2011 the School of Law achieved full accreditation by the America Bar Association and the Academy of Natural Sciences was acquired.

Drexel University currently offers a great variety of programmes, covering several faculties: Media Arts & Design, Business, Economy, Engineering, Medicine, Computing & Informatics, Biomedical Sciences & Professional Studies, Biomedical Engineering, Science & Health Systems, Nursing & Health Professions, Law, Education, Public Health, Entrepreneurship, Hospitality & Sport Management, as well as online education. There are also several Research Centres and Institutes at Drexel, covering many faculties as well, such as Engineering, Science, Arts and Business.

Student Life at Drexel University

The three main communities of Drexel University are the Undergraduate Student Government Association of Drexel University, the Graduate Student Association, and the Campus Activities Board. The first two are more focused on advocating the students’ interests, working with administrators to solve student problems and promoting between the students and the administration, while the latter is more focused on planning events and developing a strong culture. In addition, the university has its own radio station, television channel, and publications. There are over 250 student organisations with a wide range of categories to choose from culture, media, politics, fraternities and sororities, academics, and many others.
