Stressful lottery, varied options, cheaper than off-campus – Living on campus is great because it’s so much cheaper than any of the other off-campus living options. The dorms themselves range from large studios overlooking the Hudson to small cramped double rooms. Private baths are rare, and most of the best housing options go to upper-class students (although there are plenty of great freshman options, and Columbia offers you the rare opportunity to live like a single freshman). Most dormitories are within a reasonable distance of campus (up to 15 minutes on foot), and many showcase historic Columbia and city architecture. The house lottery is a bit complicated and very stressful if you don’t get a large number. Kitchen facilities are poor in most dorms. Best option: Watt studio singles. Worst option: McBain Double (mostly college dorms).
