I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Sheffeild. I came to Uni knowing nobody and it concerned me how I would fit in. But from the first day I came I felt relaxed and comfortable in my environment. The student union is very important in Sheffield and the range of clubs and social events really helped me to make new friends and grow out of my shell. The campus is smaller than most but well connected so it was very easy to get around .
View moreWhen I first came to this city, I was merely an International student stuck in an unknown city during COVID. Homesick and isolated, I wasn’t entirely sure if I wanted to stay here anymore. However, the minute my quarantine got over, I stepped outside and was welcomed by the sweetest people and lecturers at the university. I felt at home with all the Indian restaurants around, the big and small businesses, it was like a little city from a fairytale. This univeristy is based in a student city, which means that you are never alone. Everywhere you look, you will find people who are in the same boat as you. From studying to partying, you make new and unforgettable friends that you never thought you could have. Specific to my course (Biomedical Sciences), this University is known for its research in that field and has some of the best equipment and technology provided. As I come to the end of my degree, I don’t regret for a second that I chose to spend 3 years of my life in this city and University. I can now proudly call it Home.
View moreExcellent university.
Lots of opportunities within the university to get involved with other interests outside of the course you’re doing. Always lots going on to engage in and try new things which you may not normally have tried.
Hi, I am currently in my second year of Biomedical Sciences. As a whole, I would highly recommend this degree for those who would like to pursue medicine. It completely and thoroughly helps revise the basics and you would have a plus point or a head start if you try to pursue medicine in the future. It is similar to the format of taking pre-med before med in the US.
View moreThe programme is a great programme in terms of academic standing and career prospects after completing the PhD, as Uni of Sheffield is among the red brick universities.
Sheffield uni also has great links to research programmes through UKRI and NERC, which allows fully-funded PhD projects. As well as this, there are fantastic links to other universities to collaborate with.
The facilities in my lab are great also.
However, the main thing I have unfortunately noticed since starting the PhD is the representation of women in STEM. The majority of senior academics and senior positions in my department and in my school are held by men.
The facilities for women in my department are subpar. Women in PhD, PostDocs, fellowships and teaching staff, in my department, who have had a baby have faced difficulties. The maternity pay procedure is non-existant, where HR does not know what to do either. In addition, there are zero breastfeeding or changing facilities in my research building. The building does however have space to bring your dog in for the day .. but not a baby.
The letdown of women in this instance can only come from not having to accommodate before, which comes from the exclusion of women in science. This also comes from the outdated view that women academics must choose academia or to have children, but not both.
My supervisor is a fantastic scientist, and an advocate for women in science, and luckily many of the academics in my school hold this view. However, the issue goes higher than my school being able to fix this.
View moreI love the university, the crowd is mixed and friendly so one gets to meet all sorts of people. There is a wide range of extracurricular activities and societies available which I love the most; from sports to volunteering it has everything to offer. Hence, one never feels alone or left out. The courses focus on overall development than just academic.
