The undergraduate course in materials science at the University of Oxford is extremely well formatted, with the lectures all building upon one another, with many links between topics, providing a coherent overview of materials science. The lectures are extremely useful, providing all the necessary information as outlined in the course synopsis, though could be more concise in places. All the lecturers are extremely helpful, answering any questions or queries throughout the course, and to further this, anything not understood is consolidated in small classes or ‘tutorials’ between 2 or 3 students and their tutor. Practicals also help those who prefer a hands-on approach to learning and give students more independence with learning. The main issue within the department is the lack of communication between students and the departmental management, particularly if one emails with any problems, as you will likely not get a response. The career prospects post-degree are varied, from further research to engineering industry or financing jobs, many doors stay open post-graduation and the industrial visits and talks offered to help you start to pave your career path throughout the degree, whilst gaining contacts in the process.

The University of Oxford itself is an extremely versatile place with something for all! Whether you love sports, going out or other activities, there is a society for everyone, from film clubs to rowing for all abilities. The college system within the university allows for you to become part of a tight-knit community and get to know those in other years! The university is also very international, with many ethnic groups and societies you can also get involved in.
