What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Course modules

I think the university really focuses on making sure students are well prepared for real world scenarios by teaching things that are up to date and much required in the industry today. With my course, I wish we had seminars but I know other courses that are based on science and social science have a lot of those.

    Good place to study

I am a 2nd year engineering student. before that, I completed the preparatory year of study (I studied English, the history and culture of Britain, mathematics and physics) and lived in a family. At the university, I like a clear grading system that shows by what criteria how many points we can get. Since I love sports, I did the first part of my second year as a volunteer at the sports center. It is very convenient that shops and cafes are located on the territory of the university and I do not waste my time on this, since the school day lasts from 8-9 am to 3-4 pm.

    Software engineering

It was well structured overall with a lot of useful information and modules. However year after year the quality of the education that I have received declined. That was due to changes in the lecturers, covid, online learning etc. However, the next year study with a new program that I hear is pretty good with new useful technologies that are included. Overall the university and the great city will always have a place in my heart as well as the special people and friends that I met 😉
If you have a passion for computer science and what to study in an amazing environment interesting modules and live in a beautiful city that is your place 😊

Quite a good university with a bit messed up Computer Science course

The facilities of the school of computing are great – very modern building, newest equipment, campus located in the city centre (most likely you don’t need to commute there by metro or a bus).

One major thing however that is lacking is the organisation. Being a third-year student I still have the same feeling – the program is written very chaotically. In 2019 there was that revolution of the programme (to keep learning the newest technology) to which lectures and demonstrators still feel a bit unadapted.

I hope this will get better in the next year or two years. However, after that time, the taught technology may change again (which is good) and it will take another couple of years for the lecturers to be fluent in what they teaching (which is not good).

    The Newcastle University Experience

During my almost 3 full years of stay here in Newcastle upon Tyne I have had one of the best moments of my life. Newcastle University and the Computer Science programme have allowed me to meet a lot of amazing people with whom I have shared many amazing moments.

Overall, the programme has given me a stable foundation, allowed me to learn several coding languages to an intermediate level. The lecturers are professionals and have taught and demonstrated me a lot along the way.

Moreover, the student life in the city is simply amazing, international friendly and gives you the chance to meet a lot of amazing people. Finally, one of the best perks of studying in Newcastle is that the accommodations are affordable and there is a good balance between cost and quality.

    Demonstrators

Like everything, the university isn’t without its flaws but overall the education is quite good. The professors try to encourage us to learn and find solutions for the task we are given on our own. I would like to highlight the demonstrators in the university since they teach us how to practice our theoretical skills and explain any questions we have thus further affirms and expand our knowledge.

    Newcastle university

I am a stage 2 comp-sci student and to the moment everything is great. Overall everybody is trying to help you with what they can to make your uni life a lot easier. The staff and lecturers are great they are all trying to be professional and help you with your studies as much as possible. There could be one or two lecturers that I don’t really like but I think this is normal, because it depends on taste, you may like how somebody teaches the material that the others don’t. All in all Newcastle University is a great and I would gladly recommend it to everyone.

    Great computing campus and support

Newcastle University’s computing campus (the USB)is brand new and definitely deserves to be the highlight of my interview. It is modern and very well equipped, with a lot of good computers, supporting all kinds of software and open to use for computer science students. I remember being worried about what I would do if I didn’t have a personal PC, but that was a false worry – the USB is a great place to go and work on your projects anyways! I have also looked for help with software at reception and I was given help with it and a lot of attention. Overall Newcastle University feels like a great choice for me.
