My degree was awarded by The Open University, but the course delivery took place at Middlesbrough College through a partnership program. I completed a BSc in Music Technology with in-person teaching, studio work, and day-to-day support provided by Middlesbrough College staff, while the curriculum, assessments, and final degree were managed by the OU.
The programme was engaging and well-structured, offering a solid mix of real-world practical experience and essential academic modules. The access to professional-grade studios, industry-standard equipment, and one-to-one support made the learning environment feel close to what you’d get in a traditional university setting — if not better, in terms of hands-on access.
Lecturers were knowledgeable and supportive, and the small class sizes meant you were never just a number. The flexibility offered by the Open University’s framework also allowed for independent learning, time management, and self-discipline — all of which are valuable skills for working in the real world.
Overall, this setup gave me the best of both worlds: the academic credibility of an Open University degree and the practical, community-driven support of Middlesbrough College.
