What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

Psychology module topics are varied and engaging. All of the lectures are recorded, allowing ease and peace of mind when coming to revising and reviewing modules, also allowing for the occasional missed lecture without stress. Although the student support isn’t extremely prominent, if needed the lecturers and student support team are happy to help when problems arise within your studies.

    Don't bother.

The psychology masters course was awful. In the lectures, the tutor spoke about nothing relating to assignments, and mostly plugged their own work or work of their colleagues. We seemed to cover a lot of different topics but spent minimal time on the one they were asking us to write about.
We were given masses of further reading which was no relevant to passing the assignment or even remotely close to expanding our knowledge.
The lecturers don’t take criticism of the course or university and think Manchester university is the best place to study. I have been to two other universities and this is by far the worst.
Campus was dated and tired, and the lecture theatres where totally inaccessible.
The support from Manchester was abysmal, counselling service was an app that was useless and to get an appointment was near enough impossible. If you were not locate to the area you have 0 chance of making friends and getting help and support from the tutor as they never answer their emails!

    Three-legged golden crow.

A three-legged golden crow is a mythical creature in Chinese culture, it is said that it is dominant, incomparable and extremely rare. The University of Manchester is just that. Getting into a university like Manchester was as amazing as seeing a three-legged golden crow, felt mythical but true somehow. As an international student, I was apprehensive at first but Uni has got such a welcoming, busy atmosphere that I never had to feel loneliness.

The lectures are efficient and concise, and the way the uni structures the method of teaching is impeccable. You have got loving TAs and attentive teachers who are always there for you.
Transitioning to a university is hard especially if you are an international student but the best part is the university understands this better than anyone and does everything to make you feel belong.
To all those who wish to study at Manchester, I would highly advise you to prepare yourself to handle the workload because here at Manchester among the chilling there is also a lot of studying and working involved.

Too interested in Russel Group status

When I studied at the University of Manchester, I was so incredibly excited to be going to such a prestigious university with a well known name, especialy as they were and are a part of the Russell Group universities. Despite this, after spending 4 years at the university, I found staff members to be unsupportive, patronising and with an air of superiority. Some staff did not find helping students to be a part of their job description and would give lectures with no information on their slides but would speak at a rate too fast to comprehend. I was left struggling and confused.

    Bit Isolating

Overall it’s been fun and covid hasn’t made it easy in lecturers to make it as good as it once was. However, not much effort in socialising students has been made so it felt quite lonely at times.

As for deadlines, all of my essays have been marked by teaching assistants and not actual lecturers. This always results in issues with marking and is such a pain.

I’ve enjoyed my time at UoM but I don’t think a lot of it can be attributed to my course.

University of Manchester is a diverse university with a large body of network and social network. I enjoy studying on campus with a range of students who are studying a broad range of subjects. I would recommend this university as the facilities are quite good.

    Blended Learning

I really enjoyed the content of the course and found the professors and tutors to be very warm and understanding. However, everyone found the quick switch to blended learning very difficult to adapt to which meant sometimes lectures weren’t as well prepared or engaging.

    A review of Manchester University

I think the University is really great. There’s a lot of communication between staff and students in terms of what is happening throughout the week/month/year and what work students need to be focusing on. There’s also been a lot of support offered to students during this pandemic especially from the Psychology staff. The online resources are really helpful for students to complete work and keep up to date and there’s a big community of friendly people at this university. The accommodation is great but some aren’t as good and become rowdy especially at the start of the year. There could be more to support international students and the costs they have to pay.

The university is very supportive outside of lectures by providing many opportunities to look into future careers such as by hosting careers fairs, sending regular emails about any relevant career openings.
