My experience at MMU has been generally fantastic. I studied English and Film at Undergrad level and am currently studying an MA in English.
One of the most notable things about MMU is its atmosphere and attitude; meaning that compared to UoM and other Russell Group Universities, it seems much less exclusive and/or elitist, and much more down to earth.
From my experience with the English and Film course, the course content is very accessible and engaging, containing some subjects that I am very familiar and comfortable with, and others that were new to me but extremely interesting.
What makes this experience however is the wonderful teachers and tutors of the English department, some of the most passionate and personable intellectuals I have ever got to meet, some of whom I maintain friendly relations with.
I cannot speak for the experience of other subjects e.g STEM and computer science, as I have heard completely contrary things from my friends studying those courses. That being said, in my time at MMU, I have gained so much knowledge and have drastically improved myself as an academic and as a worldly human being.
View moreManchester Metropolitan University is a great university. Following my seamless introduction to the city centre campus (that was modern, and had all the facilities required to be a successful student), I continually felt supported, and was made to feel comfortable asking for help if I ever needed it. The English department was exceptional, with a wide range of module choices and very helpful and knowledgeable professors. At the end of my 3 years, I was very happy with my decision to study at MMU, and would do it all over again.
View moreOverall my experience was mixed at MMU, I enjoyed aspects of the course however it wasn’t the best environment for learning I didn’t feel and only a small handful of tutors were helpful and when marking my final dissertation the seniors members of staff tried to mark my essay down by 10% which would’ve resulted in a failing grade however I appeal against this and got my original score reinstated. Overall I feel my experience with this University was a disappointing one, I had no additional help when I struggled with certain aspects of my dissertation so had to depend on friends to help guide me through it which I am very grateful for.
When I joined the Alumni again I thought I would be assisted with help to find suitable employment in relation to my degree but the after care has been very disappointing also. Just looking at overall rankings of Universities local ones such as Bolton, Salford etc are overtaking MMU and it’s no surprise. I wish I could say I had a very good experience with my time at MMU over fellow students on my course dropped out and it’s no surprise. I can’t say I did and £9000 tution a year was worth it.
View moreWhat I would say the best thing about this university is the facilities it contains as it has studios available. However, the lectures are terrible and the assignments can be very questionable to what you are actually meant to be studying.
View moreManchester Metropolitan University seemingly transitioned smoothly online during the lockdowns from Covid. They changed the structure from several classes happening at once to focussing on each lesson one at a time. This meant that you leant everything needed and completed an assignment in 4 weeks. I personally disliked this way of teaching as it made me fell rushed and as if I wasn’t able to grasp the content before I had to be able to write an assignment about it.
View moreMy university experience has been mixed so far. In my first year, I had a full university experience for a few months which I thoroughly enjoyed. Then our country was placed into lockdown which introduced blended learning. Our lessons were placed online and it was difficult to focus on my degree. However, the teachers are very supportive at MMU and there is help available for everybody no matter what the case. The course itself is more challenging than I expected however, this will only make my final outcome in completing my degree more fulfilling, hopefully.
