What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    Online test

I can see the staff tried their best to ensure a relatively good quality of teaching during the COVID-19. Providing online lectures and allowing online tests which help a lot. However, safe online teaching means a lack of communication and socializing, I’m not blaming them, this is the sadness we have to bear with.

To come to UCL be oh-so-keen - come here and *u'l c* what I mean!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed studying at UCL. As a second-year student on a four-year undergraduate Master’s program in psychology, I feel that I have not only gained a deeper understanding of the subject compared to when I began the course having completed A-Level Psychology, but I have also honed my critical thinking, academic-writing, interpersonal, and public speaking skills. The delivery of content from leading academics in the field and the opportunity to interact with them and have discussions around their subjects/topics of expertise has been a thrilling experience! Small-group seminars with peers and academics in informal settings are an integral part of the course as well and have been instrumental in developing my finer understanding of the nuances of the subject. The ease with which I can now read and understand an academic journal article, complete with the Results section in most parts, bears testimony to my progress in the subject, owing to not only psychological but also statistical knowledge. I must also add that this knowledge has been both theoretical and practical, with coding in the programming language RStudio, and the development and conduction of online experiments on the ‘Gorilla’ platform. Besides the high quality of teaching, the format of examinations – all of which have been open-book – has meant absolutely no need to memorise materials at all, with a focus on understanding rather than memorising, a point I cannot stress enough given the common misconception that studying psychology involves a lot of memorising. Besides these factors, the thriving and vibrant academic community, there are hundreds of clubs and societies, and events going on all the time. The people are extremely friendly, welcoming, understanding and helpful, and I’ve made some great friends here that I know will be my friends for life! All in all, if you have the opportunity to, I would say – definitely come to UCL and *u’l c* why I say so!

    Teaching quality

I think my tutors are all very kind and considerate to students. They are very happy to answer students’ questions and encourage us to think critically. They also offer us a lot of resources that help us with our studies. I’ve learnt so many things in the last two months and I really love my courses.

Excellent reputation, brilliant education, unbeatable location

Really loved my time at UCL and would go as far as saying for me it’s the best university. It has some excellent facilities and many different ones including the new 24-hour student centre for studying. The reputation of UCL is excellent and teaching as well as research is top-notch. Location is excellent being in the heart of London in Bloomsbury. Can’t think of a better university to go to.

Social life is good but the University itself is a MESS

People that go to UCL tend to be friendly and open and its a great mix of cultures and ethnicities. Unfortunately the university is extremely liberal and so if you are anything else than that expect judgement and criticism.

Moreover, the way UCL is run and managed is laughable at best. Old facilities, very disorganised Student Union and mediocre Support Services.

But as I said its a great place to meet and make friends for life and the University is high in rankings which helps when getting a job.

    As good as it gets!

UCL is a fantastic university in one of the world’s best cities. The facilities are excellent, albeit a little spaced out at times. The quality of the teaching is excellent and the faculty members are all great – you can go to them with any and all issues and they’ll do whatever they can to help solve them. There is quite a large workload, as expected, but it is very manageable if you’re wise with your time and attend your lectures. The only negative that comes to mind is that many lectures are given by guest lecturers rather than a UCL faculty member, thus the style of lectures can vary greatly (which can be good or bad depending on what you prefer), and it can be difficult to get in touch with these guest lecturers if you have queries.
