Architecture is a specialisation preferred by many young people who love solving problems, have a passion for creativity, or an innovative imagination ready to be shown off.
Over the years, it has become a very popular speciality. Young people are aware of the importance and diversity of Architecture, but also of the need for a permanent practice, as most Architecture courses aim at the practical part, to implement feasible structures not only on paper, through sketches, but also in real life.
Architects can choose to grow in all markets or follow a single specialisation, such as Landscape Architect, Resident Architect, Urban Designer, Green Design Architect or Interior Designer, according to their preferences.
Usually, a major reason that motivates students to study Architecture is the possibility of having an impact on their community. How do they do this? By exploring the world, analysing people’s work on constructions and looking for answers to identified problems, they become more creative, more open to new things, bringing a new vision to the world.
Critical thinking skills are constantly being developed by graduates who study Architecture because they get the opportunity to visualise the structures before they are made.
Upon completion of studies, there are many possibilities for employment, and salaries can be generous. A particular increase in the employment rate is expected to be in the Green Design field. This requires creating environmentally-friendly constructs that do not harm nature and generate sustainability.
Young people must have a university degree in Architecture to pursue a career in that field, that is an Architecture Bachelor or Master of Architecture. Often, undergraduate programmes last 5 years, and Master programmes last between 2 and 3 years, depending on the chosen university and the form of education followed. One notable thing is that Master programmes are often for those who have not completed a Bachelor’s specialisation, and that is why the course component can be similar to the Bachelor’s. As far as Doctoral programmes are concerned, the duration is 3 years, and the architects work on research projects.
At the same time, it should be mentioned that the United States and other territories have introduced a professional license Architect Registration Examination. This is a mandatory exam which tests the candidate’s skills, abilities and knowledge. In the UK, for example, the final registration to become an architect is regulated by the Architects Registration Board.
Although the list of courses may differ from one country to another, some of the most important modules for a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture are Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD), Physics, Visualisation, Science, and Technology.
Throughout their studies, students can take part in various internship programmes or choose a tutor architect to work with. In this way, they get a better idea of what this profession is about in practice and gain the necessary experience needed for their professional development.
I like our school very much, because the school provides many club activities, psychological counseling and career experience activities every week, as well as free paper tutorials and resume revision services, which have laid a good foundation for my future development outside the campus. However, due to the heavy pressure of school work, I have limited time to participate in these activities. Maybe the school can carry out some seminars or courses to help us better balance study and various activities. In general, I highly recommend our school, it is a good place to study.
View moreUCL is an international organization that makes you feel welcome. It defines itself as a global university, and it is.
Courses and instructors are usually very well prepared and students are open to discussion.
University services such as the library and career office are very convenient and readily available.
When it comes to student life, the university itself and the student union offer a wide range of activities, as well as exciting life in London with events all year round.
The research cluster I have chosen belongs to a branch of new materials research. It is a completely new field. It has developed considerably so far, but still needs a lot of research. When I was working on this project, I felt a certain amount of difficulty. It requires a lot of research and practice. We have to constantly develop and update our progress, so this makes for a very fulfilling project. We also encounter a lot of difficulties in our research, which is a necessary process for us to study the field of architecture.
View moreTeaching staff who are always positive and encouraging, and who provide us with constructive criticism. I was able to obtain help swiftly and efficiently. The professionals are excellent, with lots of information and resources. Despite the difficulties with Covid and the transition to online classes, an institution is a nice place with kind people and a vibrant community. It offers fantastic facilities and excellent instruction. BTW, Edinburgh is a fabulous city and I really appreciate living here for one year.
View moreI had a wonderful experience here. The social life is also excellent as many of the students here are quite studious and focused on their degrees. The choice of extracurricular activities is extensive, with hundreds of societies to join, as well as diving, rock climbing and other activities. However, this year has been a challenging time due to the virus. Of course, architecture majors can only participate in one club at most, because they are really busy. But the teacher will still support us to join some clubs because it can also bring a lot of inspiration to our design. So overall, studying at UCL can be a very interesting and fun-filled university life.
View moreGraduate life is very interesting, but it is like a small society. As a fresh graduate from a Chinese undergraduate university, I found myself surrounded by many international students who were much older than me. The oldest are 7 or 8 years older than me, have more than 5 years of work experience, and it can be said that they are academic in their field. The youngest is also one year older than me, that is, after a year, they all have relevant work experience before they come to graduate courses. I have to say that Chinese students are coming, because our postgraduate Chinese students are the youngest group. So most of them don’t go to events and clubs, they’re all super shy.
View moreThis programme’s concentration on different economic and policy approaches to development is especially valuable for me and my career afterwards. It would not only grant me sensitivity to policy changes but also useful tools for analysis purposes. The practice module that conducts fieldwork in Uganda is of utmost importance for me, for it could show me how theoretical “development” fits into actual situations. I can also have a closer touch with local NGOs and understand how they operate under local regulations. I am especially fond of the programme’s focus on discovering how societies overcome poverty to create healthy, wealthy, and sustainable societies and why some persistently fail. This focus clicks with my vision of helping the poor and understanding why some poverty is so enduring.
View moreEverything is great, better than the average level. But a little more boring than before because of the covid-19, such as the cancellation of the field trip. Hopefully, it can be added in the near future. We almost took every class online in the last term, which did not leave me with a very impressive experience of studying at Bartlett.
View moreThe format of teaching was engaging and aided understanding, especially with site visits integrated into the modules and assessments which allowed for the application of knowledge into real-life situations.
The course was also well structured, but there were quite a lot of overlapping lessons across modules and could have been used to teach other content. More collaboration may be needed between professors of different modules to ensure less repetition.
The material was also mostly UK based and should allow for wider scope and more international perspectives.
I think the school infrastructure is very good. But we should hold more cross-major communication activities because we don’t have many opportunities to communicate with students from other majors. Hold more activities so that we can broaden our knowledge and make friends.
