What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    My experience of studies

The university provided me with a lot of opportunities to learn. I gained a lot of experience from working on group projects as a master’s student, and I learned the importance of each team member’s role. During the course, I gained insight into creating creative ideas from scratch and expanding on them. Each group project allowed me to reflect on myself and contribute my skills to the group.

My favourite aspect of this program is the way the lecturers are helpful and provide us with their views on the topic, which gave me a deeper understanding of what I’m learning. Overall, my master’s experience at my university has been amazing. Each student at my university has access to multiple resources for their future career, which is very helpful. After completing my postgraduate program, I hope to gain more skills and excel.

    An amazing University experience!

Loughborough has a massive campus, full of great facilities for your education. One of the off-putting things is that the university is in a market town, but after starting there in 2021, I found this was no issue! The campus pleasantly surprised me, and there’s so many opportunities to get involved with stuff.

In regards to my degree (BA Design / Industrial Design), I’ve loved every minute of it. At first it was a little tough, but now I’m doing way better, achieving an overall 2.1 for my first year. Plus the facilities in the design school are top tier! With lecturers it’s definitely hit or miss, but for the most part they’ve been great. Career aspects are also amazing for my course, you also get regular emails and stuff to keep you in the loop about events, job fairs and opportunities.

Accommodation wise, I have no complaints. Some are a bit outdated (such as Rutherford, would also stay clear of Whitworth), but the newer buildings are class. It’s quite competitive between different accommodations, as they usually engage in friendly competition which makes for a really nice atmosphere. I can definitely recommend my accommodation (Faraday), it’s made my first year a joy and the location makes it ideal. Plus everyone knows everyone! The community aspect is amazing, and in my 9 months there I’ve never felt left out. It honestly feels like a home away from home, hence why I chose to return next year.

Last thing I will comment on is the nightlife. It’s… okay. Our student union becomes a massive club on certain days of the week, which is great. But we mostly go to Nottingham or Leicester on a night out, since they’re at most 15 minutes away by train! Being so close to the two cities makes things a lot easier!

Overall, I can’t wait to start my second year at Loughborough! Good luck to everyone, hope this helped 🙂

    Great course and social life

Couldn’t recommend Loughborough enough to people I know looking for unis to go to. They have great facilities, world class courses and I found it was more social than I anticipated. In comparison to many friends going to different universities I found that Loughborough hosted many more events and socials as well as extracurricular clubs etc than any other uni I’d come across. I love studying Textiles and know that when I graduate I’ll have a widely recognised uni name within the industry. We are encouraged to take on a placement year, which I feel many other unis don’t push. The placement year has helped me enormously and I feel will benefit me hugely in my future career.

Nice and peaceful area to study and campus is beautiful

I love Loughborough university, I did my BA there. Loughborough is a nice little town, very safe, peaceful and beautiful. It is a lovely place to study and I enjoyed my time there, the university has good facilities, I studied art and I received a lot of technical help from the university staffs, such as sculpting, painting, setting up an exhibition, etc. The campus life is great, even Loughborough is a little town and unlike big city with a wild nightlife, the Loughborough student union hosts great parties and the university sometimes will hire a bus for students at night to go clubbing in Nottingham. Food is so so on campus but there are plenty of options around town, everything is walking distance and housing there is cheap if you don’t want to stay in dorms.
