What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

Good professors but more important amazing people

Surrey is undoubtedly one of the friendliest universities in the UK. I have always felt welcome. If you find someone in your course library and need help, you’re sure to get it. The people are very kind. In my day, there was a corner of the library where only the IT guys studied. very good sense of community

    Great students union

Whenever you have a problem at Surrey just go to the students union. I remember I saw somewhere that it is ranked as a top 10 students union in the UK and I understand why. Once I had a problem because of a marking error and they took care of it within a week. The university was comprehensive and corrected there mistake

    Good experience

I really enjoyed studying in Surrey. Computer science is a difficult course but I feel that I received all the support possible to do my best. The university has senior students who work as tutors and hosts a weekly chat room with chairs. At exam time it helps a lot as students get used to joining. I highly recommend Surrey to anyone looking for a university with a good academic and professional record

Computer Science the best decision I made

I loved my course. And I am genuinely happy to have this opportunity to share my experience. I studied 3 years in Surrey I will graduate this year. I feel that I learned a lot and that I grew as a person. Surrey will always be my home. I was quite happy there and I say that I made the best decision possible in coming here.

For starters, I really enjoyed the course. I was well prepared and the teachers were also very good. I liked how the course combined lectures with tutorials and labs. There was a lot of independent work, but in computer science we had a building of our own. Hence, most of the time we were there. We were a very close cohort which made my experience even better.

I recommend all students to try to do more than just the course while in Surrey. To start, join a society, clubs or even work part-time. This will help you to improve your time management skills. If I could go back, I would like to have done a spring internship out, even a summer internship. Most of my friends have made and received a job offer. I only started applying at the end of the year which made everything more stressful but thank god everything went well. I got a lot of help from the surrey careers department.

    Surrey economics

The Stag Hill Campus is amazing – from the facilities to the gorgeous lake, I love being on campus. – Manor Park is great but it feels a bit disconnected – when I lived there in the first year, I always felt like I was an outsider. – The Student’s Union is amazing and with each year, when new officers come along, you can see the amazing difference they are making. – The university is inclusive, representing each student and their needs. – I love my course – Surrey is one of the top universities for it and you can tell why!

    – The Computer Science department at Surrey has really worked with what is best for the students throughout the pandemic – even as we come out the other side, there is so much support and the lecturers truly care. – The content they teach is engaging and prepares us for when we leave the university.

The best aspects of my university experience include the beautiful campus (I love the lake, geese, and natural environment) and the students’ union (so many events are offered). I admire the consistent support from lecturers and interesting course content. The course could be improved by tackling the amount of reading offered – for some years it’s too much reading! Also, some modules seem harder than others – there should be a balance between all modules in terms of intellectual stimulation. I prefer online lectures and seminars – they are much more accessible. As an English literature degree, contact hours are inevitably low. However, I would appreciate it if they were much higher.

It’s very close to London! A good divide between student and personal life because of the campus university. I like the 24/7 support provided by accommodation services. I also admire the mentor scheme – definitely helped me in the first year. I disliked the kitchen… the stove and fridge weren’t the greatest. Also, not all rooms on campus are the same – I pay the same as others, and their kitchens etc are much better! It is quite a homely place to be. Nice views, amazing campus, and great course! The facilities are modern and useable, you can book rooms as a student and use them for anything! Also, good food options (my personal favourite is Young’s Kitchen) and the student life is lively.

    Tough

The program is good but does not have enough student support as it should, tutorials are a joke, cant ask questions in tutorials and doubts are rarely answered. You mostly listen to lecturers talk. Student to lecturer interaction is terrible.
