Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.
Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.
After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.
Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.
The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.
In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.
A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.
The teaching is excellent and they are very good at creating a pleasant atmosphere for the students. Especially compared to other universities they understand how to make you love the subject. A thing they could improve on is the support for housing and the bureaucracy in general that is lacking.
View moreThe first thing I noticed on campus is that the university is surrounded by so much greenery and is partly surrounded by a forest. Tilburg is also a much quieter city than Amsterdam, Rotterdam, etc, and there isn’t a ton of nightlife, although there will always be parties to go to if you know where to look. But this is precisely why the university is a good fit for someone like me, that can get very distracted very fast. The perks of Tilburg are that if you DO want to go get crazy, all you have to do is hop on the train and you can go wherever you need to, so everything is within reach but not so close that it distracts from your studies.
I also like the structure of the psychology program, where in the first year you do a basic foundation of psychology so you can learn what you like, in the second year you can pick your major and in your third year you can pick your minor (with the option of an overseas exchange). It’s also worth noting that TiU also offers some highly specific majors that most universities don’t offer.
The academic year is broken down into multiple blocks, with exams at the end of each one. This means that you are not overwhelmed with having to do exams with a year’s worth of content all at once. Most exams are 6 weeks worth of content, but sometimes it is 12 if a course goes on for 2 blocks.
The campus also has great teachers who are very friendly and approachable, a lot of student clubs that are very diverse, and great on-campus facilities.
One downside however is that a lot of students struggle to find housing so it’s imperative that you start looking as soon as possible.
Overall, I am satisfied with my choice of studies.
The psychology program is well organized. During the first year, you have all introductory courses to the majority of fields in Psychology so you can become more familiar with what suits you the most. Then during the second and third year, you can personalize your study path and basically choose the courses you want to study. Most professors have extensive experience with teaching so the courses are properly taught. Moreover, I am glad about the level of difficulty of my studies. I can say that If you are motivated to study, you will definitely pass the courses. However, here, it’s difficult to get a high grade for the course, compared to other Universities in the Netherlands, because of the strict grading rules. On the one hand, it can be seen as an advantage because it motivates you more, but on the other hand, it’s a big disadvantage for people who wants to have a good GPA to apply for a good Master’s program.
In terms of the student nightlife, in Tilburg it’s difficult to have one 🙂 However, the city is nicely connected to the larger cities in which you can find more opportunities to spend your free time.
More about the University itself, the campus is compact and well-kept. Students have access to supermarkets, restaurants, and a variety of coffee points (you need a lot of coffee during examination weeks :)). There are places to go for a walk because the campus is situated next to the forest. All university staff treat students with respect and always try to help as much as possible. Of course, there is still room for improvement.
1. I am an international student so it was a real challenge to find the proper accommodation in Tilburg, which would not cost a ridiculous amount of money. There is nothing like a student house that is supported by the University, so you need to rent a place only from private owners.
2. During the examination period students lack places to study. Nevertheless, there are several buildings provided to students for studying purposes, but still, that is not enough for the number of students here.
3. Quite often my exam was scheduled during Saturdays. Personally, I think it’s not fully professional to interfere with students’ free time. However, the whole examination process is always carried out properly.
To conclude, it’s nice to study here! I believe this University will prepare me well for my future carrier path.
The program is well-structured and highly international. The courses are extended with international internships along with university internships.
Course coordinators are highly equipped and interested in the research master students.
In my opinion, Tilburg University is one of the best not only in the Netherlands but also in Europe. It was in the list of the best 10 universities in Europe with its Business program. The university is demanding but at the same time, there are a lot of activities outside of the lecture halls.
View moreI study Psychology (international bachelor) and it’s really cool tbh. you will definitely need to work and put in a substantial amount of effort to pass. It is not an easy university where you can just get a degree. Really good teachers (at least most of the time) and great facilities. The thing I like the most is the campus, it’s really beautiful and full of nature..etc Just before you come here to check the housing situation, because it is a huge problem and many students were camping/homeless for a long while, and even until now 4 months in to the year, some students still cant find a place.
