Where Rivers, Cities & Careers Converge

I picked the Master River Delta Development program, expecting technical coursework on dikes and water management. What I got was a much bigger picture—how deltas shape economies, cities, and entire ways of life, and how engineers, planners, and policymakers actually need to work together to manage them.
Rotterdam is basically the perfect classroom for this. You’re studying delta management in a city that’s spent centuries fighting, adapting to, and living with water. Field trips weren’t theoretical — you’d be standing on an actual storm surge barrier or walking through a floodplain redevelopment project the same week you studied it in class.
The program’s strength is its mix of disciplines. You’re not just doing hydraulics—you’re pulled into spatial planning, governance, and stakeholder management, often through real projects with companies and municipalities. Group work with classmates from wildly different backgrounds (engineering, geography, and urban planning) forced you to communicate technical ideas to non-technical people, which turned out to be one of the most useful skills I picked up.
It’s intense—juggling technical rigour with policy and design thinking isn’t easy, and the international cohort means adjusting to different working styles fast. But if you want a master’s that treats river deltas as living systems, not just engineering problems, this program delivers exactly that.

    Designing My Own Study Path

Studying International Business we moved to a new building in my third year of University. The new building is amazing and has an encouraging atmosphere. I am constantly surrounded by different cultures and encouraged to meet new people. I was able to design my own learning path, choose topics I was interested in, and study abroad. The course could be a little more structured and I think the university could work on its communication sometimes, but overall I am really satisfied with my decision.

    International

The school has a very modern look. The RBS department is very international and provides opportunities to expand your knowledge on a global scale.

Most teacher have a background in the industry that they teach to students.

Improving points could be the communication of deadlines and changes within the school with students.

    Diversity and Practicality

I really enjoy the part of my university that is very practical and it gives a diverse background from business studies. The structure of the bachelor is also very helpful and the knowledge built up on each other comes at the right time. E.g. In my first year, I covered the basics of business and learned from micro and macroeconomics to management and marketing, business English and communication, intercultural competence and business ethics. The classes are with teachers who are real-life professionals bringing insights from their own lives/businesses which I think is very helpful and interesting, not only learning the boring theories. Our lessons also include no more than 30 people, cause we are divided into smaller groups, but this assists in socializing and getting your classmates know better, and helps the teacher to be more direct with you or more focused. Of course, every coin has two sides just like this uni. The practicality is its key, that you get real-life experience quite early (already in the second year you get the chance to work with companies), but on the other hand it comes with a lot of work, especially with a lot of report writing. I would say this uni gives you more than enough to get out there and land a great job. Additionally, it has a great student community and there are several extracurricular activities/organisations you can join, e.g., the Honours Program.
