What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Support

The university has a strong support system in place, ranging from special aids, scholarships, and the likes, but what really stands out is how they implement these support systems. They have a need based protocol for stuffs like that, like for example, you’re from a low income household. You can get your accommodation paid for while all you have to worry about is school and feeding yourself. It’s a really good opportunity.

    Centre of the IT Industry!

Computer Science Engineering at TU/e has so far exceeded my expectations! Most courses are structured in a practical way combining lectures, instructions and tutor hours. Alongside the tutors that students are able to ask questions about specifics, there are student mentors from the years above who can provide further help. The program does not require any previous knowledge in programming, but I would strongly advise it (speaking from experience)!

Overall, in order to be on top of your deadlines, projects, homework and workload in general, start working on your assignments on time. Catching up later will be hard and stressful so avoid it if possible. There will always be someone who you can contact if struggling.

One of the greatest advantages of studying Computer Science and Engineering at TU/e is that Eindhoven itself has become known as ‘Brainport’, the very centre of high-tech industries in the Netherlands. This is an ideal opportunity for those who want to start working while still studying!

    Good degree, poor organization

Great campus, but strict boring ridiculous rules, useless classes and overall a pain to deal with. I had a great time, landed a good job and made many friends but the class content itself was poor. And dealing with the administration was horrid.

    Great university for technical/engineering studies

Plenty of projects to give students practical experience and learn to work in groups (including multidisciplinary groups)
Very international, almost all courses are in English (I believe there are 2 degrees in Dutch)
Many opportunities to do internship/thesis with companies
Easy to get a job after the degree
    – Housing shortage in Eindhoven
    – Some professors are not great at English, but there has been a huge improvement in the last few years

For international students TU/e site mentions medium of instruction as English. 1) Is it true all classes for full program of 3years for UG computer science, English is the medium of instruction. 2) for foreign students us it mandatory to write any exams in Dutch during the course period. 3) whether foreign students can manage with English in the class, university environment and other places. 4) do teaching sometimes happen in Dutch with presence of translators in English for international students. There is no problem doing a UG computer science degree if you don\'t speak Dutch. All courses are in English and the exams are in English too. Everyone at the university speaks English (including administrative staff), in fact most locals also speak English so language is not really a problem for internationals.

    Locally International

The university facilities are fairly decent, most of the equipment seems good. However TU may be lacking in small areas like some major lecture rooms not having electric outlets for students, or some course not having any decent quality (graphics/visibility) video-lecture. TU has a great city in terms of educational facility however this city being mainly a researching and business city is arguably not the best for “student-life” as many ‘fun’ things are outside student budgets, even something as basic as housing students seems to be problematic for this city. Professors can be a hit/miss with truly exceptional people like Bart the Algorithms teacher winning best teacher multiple years in a row, on the other hand, things like “I will not upload the slides because its too much paperwork” have been said by teachers, which is appalling. Finally, I think this university has fantastic career prospects due to its existing connection to the industry, which makes the struggle with everything else worth it.

A good academic university that does not hold your hand

A good university overall. Good facilities. Located in the Brainport of Europe so finding a job is not a hard thing. It requires a lot of self-study as lecturers can be very old school. The city is not the most lively but just good enough to balance study and social life.
