What Is a Marketing Degree?

A business cannot survive if its products are not marketed in the proper way. Luckily for all the businesses out there, the number of candidates wanting to pursue a marketing career is growing tremendously.

The aim of this degree is to help students anticipate, manage, and satisfy customers’ needs and wants. By doing so, they will be able to effectively communicate the benefits of any business product to the targeted market.

Due to the fact that marketing is a complex industry, which tackles many areas ranging from market research to advertising and promotion, this degree focuses on all parts of the process before concentrating on a particular area of study.

Benefits of a Marketing Degree

Good news for marketing graduates! If you did not know yet, marketing is an essential aspect of all types of businesses, from all sectors of activity. Thus, all of them rely on marketers to promote and sell their products. A high market demand comes with many job opportunities available.

According to Labor Department Findings, graduates with a marketing degree can earn 98% more per hour than the ones working in the industry without having a specialised degree.

Furthermore, students are equipped with transferable skills, such as excellent communication abilities, strategic thinking, planning, data analysis and so on, that can be used in other industries too.

Marketing Degree Structure

Marketing degrees can be studied either as Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). The major difference lies in the presence of more scientific and technological aspects, which are commonly seen in a BSc rather than a BA.

Like most degrees, marketing courses last between three and four years, depending on the university. However, there are institutions which give students the possibility to do a two-year associate’s degree – also called a ‘foundation’ degree.

Even if graduating from both degrees qualifies candidates to work in this industry, a Bachelor degree has higher chances to lead you to well-paid jobs.

JU - Quality education & Strong international vibe

As a marketing management student at Jönköping University, I can honestly say that JU offers a unique and enriching experience, especially if you’re looking for a truly international environment. One of the first things I noticed was how diverse the place is — there are students from all over the world, and many of the programs are taught entirely in English, which made integration smoother.

The courses are very practically oriented, especially in Jönköping International Business School (JIBS). Professors often have real industry experience, and many assignments are group-based, which helps develop teamwork skills. You’re not just sitting through lectures — you’re engaging practically in projects, discussions, and sometimes working directly with companies.

The campus is compact and modern, right in the heart of the city, next to a beautiful lake. There’s a vibrant student union (JUSA) that organizes tons of events, from themed parties to cultural exchanges. If you’re social, you’ll never be bored. The international weeks and “kick-off” events were some of my favorite moments.

There’s a lot of support available — from career counseling to academic advising and even housing help. The university does a good job making sure international students feel welcome. That said, the housing process can be a bit stressful if you don’t apply early enough.

It’s a cozy city— not too big, not too small. There are cafes, bars, and places to explore outdoors. Winters are dark (prepare for that!), but the community here makes it warm. Sweden’s a bit expensive, but manageable with student discounts and cooking at home.

If you’re looking for a university that combines quality education with a strong international vibe, JU is a great choice. It’s not as massive or research-focused as places like Lund or Uppsala, but for personal growth, connections, and real-world learning, it’s been an amazing experience.

    Simply Amazing

This was by far one of the most enriching experiences in my life. The cultural capital you get in JIBS is priceless and the teachers are amazing professionals. You are pushed to your limits and at the same time you feel inspired. JU and Sweden has this entrepreneural spirit in the air, and more so to achievesomething more. Not so big,but beautiful city filled with so many different nationalities. Such an experience widens a person’s horizon.

Good University, if only a tad too academic.

I really enjoyed both the program, the atmosphere, the extra-curricular activities and the university in general. First of all, the program corresponds to what I applied for and gives a good outline of what I need for a career in that field. However, there is too much of a focus on academic work, with not enough practical experience.
The teachers are all great, open and helpful, however, students need to contact the teacher. Teachers expect students to be proactive and go and ask the teacher for help when it is needed. Once asked, it is gracefully given.
The university has more international than national students, which makes for a very good environment, especially when wanting to work in a global world.
The union is also very strong and protects the rights of the students, as well as organises events.
