What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    It was an amazing experience!

I was always sceptical about bootcamps. The big turnoff for me moreover, was doing an online course. Apart from that, I have many years of working experience in the IT industry and knew that organising work from home is not so easy, especially when the team is not mature enough, but, I have to say, CodeOp proved me totally wrong.
I was impressed by how fast the teachers organized remote classes during COVID and adapted the program, and how efficient they were during those difficult times.
It was an amazing experience. Although difficult sometimes (really difficult) but it changed my life.
    Pros:
    1) Teachers: teachers are very good, even the ones that are trainees/assistants. They give vivid explanations and are able to understand the mind of the student (hello Emefa!) It was a great idea to let trainees explain the basics as they could understand what was going on in the minds of the students who, mostly, had zero tech background.
    2) Schedule and class structure: I liked that we had scheduled for lectures and exercises and could plan our day accordingly
    3) Curriculum: logical daily challenges, data structures and algorithms, Vue… Easy stuff you learn in the pre-course, hard stuff you learn in class. I have to admit that daily challenges made my brain work every day.
    4) Support chat: if you are stuck on something you can get help there, even after the class, even on weekend, sometimes even at night! But of course, it depends on people’s availability, because not only teachers give support, but also students from other groups.
    5) Career week: Real HRs come to help to write your CV, prepare for the interview and answer your questions. Imagine my surprise when I realised that with one of the HRs training us I had an interview 4 years ago! Plus career coaching, mocked interviews and presentations from different people (we had a very interesting presentation from the Head of IT in Siemens Energy!)
    6) During the projects phase, you have an option to attend lectures of other groups on different topics if you wish
    7) Location and office: I love the new office and the terrace, although went there only few times due to covid.
    8) I really liked the culture the school created, I’m still friends with some girls from my group, after 2 years.
    Cons:
    1) I wish flesh lectures schedule was pre-planned or we had a list of the available ones (although the list of the lectures is growing all the time)
    2) As most of the students are girls, we like to create some little drama. But life would be not so interesting without it, admit it 😉

PS: Remember, this is not private, it’s a group course, I was surprised seeing students get upset that they didn’t get private calls with a teacher. If you expect to have a lot of personal support and individual classes – maybe you should ask if there is such an option for extra pay before you sign up (this option wasn’t available when I did the course)

Supportive and Empowering Bootcamp for Women+

I am taking this course in a virtual format, and have just started so I will give my initial impressions: the first thing I (and I’m sure many others) noticed is how WELCOMING and SAFE this bootcamp feels. It seems to be that the culture of many software engineering bootcamps is sink or swim, but that couldn’t be further from the truth with CodeOp. That’s not to say the bootcamp is easy, either! The content is still challenging, and the students learn a lot, but the staff and instructors are there every step of the way. I’m a former teacher, and I’m well aware that learning REQUIRES a nurturing environment. If students don’t feel safe to ask questions, things will undoubtedly slip through the cracks. On top, of the great culture, CodeOp is the first bootcamp I’ve come across that seems to know what they’re doing with pedagogy and isn’t just a cash grab. They employ instructional strategies and assess what students have learned often (while adjusting the curriculum/support for students accordingly). Additionally, they combine interactive lectures, short algorithmic exercises, mixed media formats for content presentation and homework, one-on-one meetings with instructors/TAs/career coaches, and projects to present a well-rounded learning experience for students. From the day I was accepted, I’ve been waiting for the catch – some reason this bootcamp isn’t as great as it seems – but I haven’t been able to find it! I cannot speak highly enough about this bootcamp, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who values kindness, connections, and growth!

A great community of women in tech

This was definitely a booster in my professional career. I not only learned how to code, I joined one of the best communities of women interested in tech, with great backgrounds and willing to help you.
The material, challenges, support is always up to date, with relevant and current examples.
Professors work in great companies and are willing to share their knowledge.
I now work in one of the top startups in Barcelona and I am confident that Codeop had a lot to do with that.

Fast paced, great curriculum & community

I took the course remotely – and even like this, the community feeling they build is impressive. The attention of the teachers, TAs and other students is very personal.
The contents of the course feel very complete, very specific in JavaScript environments.

Great team and teachers available to support you

CodeOp has a wonderful multicultural community and a great team willing to guide you from every step.
Having transitioned careers into starting from zero in web development felt challenging, but was well supported in a comfortable environment. The 11-week program bootcamp was intense and educational. Started the day with daily code challenges so you are constantly improving your code and problem/solving skills. Also having lectures, activities and getting some individual guidance towards your interests and career path. Teachers are very adept and patient, making you comfortable about asking questions and making mistakes, even providing one-on-one.

Although the students are widely international they could improve in providing solutions as for students that are non-European related to student visa, accommodation and work.

    CodeOp changed my professional life

Hi, I had a totally different background (I am an architect and photographer) I understand how it feels about code for the first time. I didn’t know if I would be able to understand or if I would really like this new field. Also, when I decided to sign up for the Bootcamp, I didn’t have enough time to finish the free course, I only did some lessons of JavaScript, but nothing else. On the other hand, English is not my native language, and for me, that was an extra challenge. To be honest, I was a little scared about everything…

Then, I read my options for payment, and I enrolled in Student Finance as my first option, and I had the impression that it was so great to be true! In this part, I have to say, that is totally true, in fact, during the process, they explained a few times the deal and made sure I understood all the details and what were my responsibilities and benefits. Everything clear as water.

This was a big influence in my decision to take the full-time Bootcamp, so I made my decision and signed for CodeOp in full-time modality (online).
Since the first day, I learned a lot of things, about code and about myself. This journey is super intense, full of knowledge, and rewarding at the same proportion.

Three months after finishing, I finally found a job with the support of my coach career, and of course, my agreement with StudentFinance is running exactly as we arranged. I don’t have to pay anything until I found a job that fits with the deal. It wasn’t easy, I had a lot of interviews, challenges, and bad days during this time. But I knew what my commitment was and never gave up. Right now I am getting experience in my new and first tech job as a Javascript developer and I feel proud and happy to work with a great unicorn. Nothing bad for a first job right?
I feel grateful to CodeOp because they believed in me and gave me the opportunity to access its program and prove what can I do.

I hope that my testimony helps you, and if you need more information or want to know more about anything, let me know!

Start a career as a full-stack developer in 3 months

The bootcamp is intense but very well organised, and the staff is super helpful in every step of the way. The programme focuses on JavaScript mainly, and at the end of it students have three full-stack projects under their portfolio, which is a plus compared to other bootcamps.
Given that all students are women, non-binary or trans, a big effort is made to create a safe, inviting space that allows all participants to overcome their misconceptions and/or impostor syndrome.
All in all, a great experience!

    Exceeded expectations

I did a part time remote course while also working full time. It was very intense and fast paced as one would expect a bootcamp to be.
I was looking for a suitable training in Full Stack for some time and I chose this specific programme for the curriculum and live classes. I was hoping to transition into tech, and I have found a job as a Front End Developer two months after completing the course.
It exceeded my expectations as I went in feeling a bit suspicious of the bootcamp experience, especially a remote one, but both the instructor and teaching assistant were very knowledgeable and helpful. Additional learning materials, code and all recorded videos are also available after the course (and I have used them to prep for interviews and continue to work on my projects). I was able to cover quite complex topics that were not part of the curriculum, simply because I wanted to learn as much as I can and have received additional advice/support when asked. All other staff members I’ve met were also nice and helpful people.
Career coaching was also provided, and I found it extremely helpful as I had no clue what to do with my LinkedIn profile, CV advice was also good.
I met some awesome people, learned a lot and got a new job so could not be happier with the course.

Complete assistance end-to-end. it was great!

I did an in person course. Was one of the best experiences ever. The program is very complete. The teachers are great. The support not only in technical issues is what I found the best. Guidance, assistance, a career coach, the instructor, the teaching assistances… everything was a 10/10. I learnt a LOT. But also on campus mode made it easier to learn, in my opinion. Now I also have many new friends.
