At first when I came to UJ I was excited not only because it is one of the best universities in Africa but also because it is one of the university which hold a large number of students. I could be exposed to different cultures, engage with new people and learn new things every single day. However, challenge came in my first year, I was struggling financially, mentally and emotionally. I tried to do things on my own without asking for help from the individuals which I knew. As time came I realised that I was still stuck with my past mentality of always doing everything on my own. I changed my behaviour near the end of the 2nd semester and I never tried to burden myself with anything. I still value independence but there is a time where a little bit of help from the outside can go a long way.
