The beautiful oak town of Stellenbosch, despite its longstanding history of apartheid, offered me a fascinating and eventful postgraduate study experience. The academic environment provided access to world-class facilities, thanks to generous funders and alumni groups, as well as the support of dedicated supervisors. While campus life wasn’t particularly vibrant for me, likely due to the intensity of postgraduate studies, the presence of many international students made socialising easier. Interestingly, Stellenbosch University places strong emphasis on the commercialisation of research and student innovations through initiatives like the University LaunchLab and the Technology Transfer Office. I would easily recommend SU to students interested in launching startups or seeking funding support for their research outputs.
